In advance in the video: These types of apple are best suited for apple pie
Apple cake always works, right? Especially if he is as heavenly tasty as this one! Today I will tell you an apple pie recipe that has been passed on in my family for ages.
This post was originally written by Julia Kiraga.
This cake is a real Polish tradition that has been baked in my family for generations - and which you should definitely try! With its caramelizing apple filling, surrounded by crispy shortcrust pastry and a hint of cinnamon, it is a true poem and not without reason one of the most popular cakes in Poland for afternoon coffee.

Recipe for a heavenly apple pie
You need these ingredients for a box shape (23 × 23 cm):
For the shortcrust pastry
- 300 g Mehl
- 100 g of sugar
- 1 tablespoon of vanilla sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 egg (size m)
- 250 g kalte Butter
For apple filling
- 1.5 kg apples
- 80 - 100 g of sugar
- 1 TL cinnamon
Besides that
- 1 tablespoon of breadcrumbs
- Icing sugar
And so the preparation succeeds:
1. In the first step, sift the flour with the baking powder. Add sugar, vanilla sugar, butter in cubes and the egg and knead into a dough. Form into a ball, press them slightly flat and wrap them into cling film. Then put in the freezer for about 30-40 minutes.
2. In the meantime, prepare the apple filling. Peel the apples and cut them into small cubes. Place in a pan with cinnamon and sugar. Simmer for about 15 minutes on low heat.
3. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees top/bottom heat. Line a baking pan with baking paper. I always use a square shape, as my grandma has already done. But you can also use a round springform pan.
4. Take the dough out of the freezer. Cut half of it into slices and lay out the bottom of the baking pan. Press well with your hands and sprinkle with breadcrumbs.
5. Now spread the caramelized apples on top and smooth. Then pluck the other half of the dough into small pieces and spread evenly on the filling. Push the cake into the oven for about 50 minutes until it is golden brown. Dust for serving with powdered sugar.
