New research results indicate that poor oral health could be a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. According to a new study published in the specialist magazine “Science Advances”, there is a significant connection between the bacterium porphyromonas gingivalis - the main cause of chronic gums - and Alzheimer's.
A team of scientists from the University of Louisville found P. Gingivalis in the brain of late Alzheimer's patients. They also discovered gingivitis bacteria in their spinal cord fluid. In addition, increased values of Tau protein and ubiquitin, both of whom are related to Alzheimer's disease, were also found. Tests on mice showed how the germs spread into the brain, where they destroyed nerve cells. They also found a high content of beta-amyloid protein, another characteristic of Alzheimer's disease.
The new results are exciting and the study is the largest that has ever been carried out to investigate the connection between Alzheimer's and P. Gingivalis. However, it is important to note that it does not prove that the dangerous bacterium causes Alzheimer's, but that it is probably a risk factor.
The team even found a way to kill P. Gingivalis in the brain of mice thatNeurodegenerationto reduce and prevent the formation of beta-amyloid protein.
The biotech start-up cortexyms, Inc., which the new study sponsored, has already shown in a clinical phase 1 study that a similar drug is safe and tolerated in both healthy old people and in patients with Alzheimer's. They hope to be able to carry out a phase 2 study soon to continue testing their medication.
