In a recent study, researchers unveiled new technologies that will understand and even predict human behavior in the future. Scientists at Columbia University School of Engineering and Applied Science led this groundbreaking research. They showed howartificial intelligence through in-depth analysiscan understand and possibly predict human behavior from videos.
How a machine could understand human behavior
There are a variety of characteristics in humans that distinguish them from machines. As science advances and develops technologies that capture and adapt human characteristics, researchers are still solving various mysteries of the human brain. Predicting a person's behavior based on their actions could perhaps go a long way toward understanding these most human things. The work is entitled “Learning the Predictability of the Future”. The authors presented their results at the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition. This took place from June 15th to June 25th, 2021. The new algorithm is a step towards machines making better predictions about human behavior. In addition, this approach could coordinate actions with human ones as best as possible. The study results also open up numerous possibilities for human-machine communication, such as autonomous vehicles and assistive technologies.
The study enables the development of an intuitive sense in machines to predict events based on the analysis of actions. To do this, the system has spent thousands of hours analyzing multiple videos from sports, movies and TV shows. The system also recognized the prediction of follow-up behavior for punches and handshakes. In addition, AI was able to acquire the ability to reason about the unpredictability of the future. The prediction made can be specific or generic based on the type of data provided for analysis. According to the study authors, trust comes from the feeling that the robot can understand human behavior. If machines can do this and predict actions, computers will be able to seamlessly assist humans in their daily activities. This studycan certainly pave the way for further developments in the field of artificial intelligence and help bridge the gap between technology and people.
