The traditional school cone should not be missing when your child starts school! Not only will it bring great joy to your child because of the various gifts it is filled with. It also increases the pride your child feels now that he or she is starting school. Of course you can simply buy the school cone. But if you would rather have a sugar cone that is tailored to your child's preferences, we recommend that you make a school cone.
Make a school cone with a theme
For this purpose we have put together two instructions. You will be amazed at how easy it is to make a school cone. Even beginners will have no problem with this. You can make a paper school cone or use fabric that you combine with sturdy cardboard. You can make school cones together with your child or independently if you would rather surprise your sweetheart.
Instructions
As already mentioned, you can make a sugar cone yourself without having to invest a lot of time and effort. The first instructions are particularly simple. But what do I need to make a school cone? You will need cardstock (scrapbooking paper) of any color, a hot glue gun, scissors, tissue paper and ribbon for the bow. You can find the materials for making school cones in any craft store.
Make your own school cone
Shape the cardboard into a cone. Be careful not to overlap the ends too much, as this will also reduce the diameter. And you need enough space for the sweets and gifts. Glue the ends of the paper together with some hot glue. Carefully cut off the tip that sticks out at the top due to the corners of the square cardboard.
Craft idea for the children
Now you come to the final steps. Apply hot glue to the inside along the top edge of the sugar cone. Attach the tissue paper that will be used to close the school bag to it. Once the glue has dried, you can tie this tissue paper with a bow. But don't forget the sweets first!
Craft instructions for school cones
For this variant you need a square piece of solid fabric with funny motifs. Felt is also well suited for this. You choose the size depending on how big you want your sugar cone to be. The fabric for the example is approx. 45 cm tall. But you can also make a larger school cone. Just keep in mind that the larger you make the filled sugar cone, the heavier it will be.
Made of fabric
You first have to design the basic shape. The fabric is folded diagonally in half to form a triangle. So that it doesn't slip during the next step of the craft instructions, you can also clamp it around the edges or fix it with pins. This makes work easier and prevents errors.
Cutting fabric
Since you need to form a cone, one of the two sharper corners needs to be cut off. As a precaution, you can mark the interface with a pencil beforehand so that it is straight. But small bumps are not fatal. Later the edge will be covered by a bobble ribbon and will no longer be visible.
Iron the fabric
Now is the right time to iron the fabric again. There may have been wrinkles that will look unsightly on the finished sugar cone. Once the cone has been formed, you cannot repeat this step. So check the material carefully before you decide to skip it. If you are using felt, skip this step.
Decorative fabric
Next, you need additional material that you can use to close the school bag later. Which type you use depends entirely on your taste. Use the first piece of fabric as a template to properly shape the bow, leaving a little bit of the two fabric overhanging on both sides. If it is a thin fabric, you can double or triple it. Cut the piece off.
The sewing machine as a helper
If you have folded the second fabric on top of each other as above, you should fix the layers together so that they don't slip. The best way to do this is with a sewing machine. Two seams should be enough. These also form a path through which you can thread a ribbon to tie up the sugar cone. Once you're done, you can move on to the next step. Prepare pins again.
Celebrate the start of school with a sugar cone
Turn the first fabric over so the back is facing up. Now pin the thin fabric along the curved side with pins. This makes it easier to distribute the fabric evenly. Thanks to the seams from the previous step, the fabric cannot shift and this makes attaching it a lot easier. Sew both fabrics together. Now you are almost finished making the school cone.
Form the cone
Fold the fabric in half to create a triangle. Make sure that none of the edges protrude. The wrong side of the fabric should also face up in this step. This creates a seam that will no longer be visible later. You can also use pins to secure the edges again with pins.
Sew sugar cone
Now sew both edges together. Since there are no special shapes, this seam is easy to carry out even for beginners. If necessary, you can also use hot glue instead of the sewing machine. However, the sewn sugar bag is a lot more stable, which is important because your child will be carrying the school bag around for a long time and it will be filled with relatively heavy things. Keep this in mind when you make the school cone.
Turn inside out
Now you can finally turn the fabric inside out and look at the almost finished work. The seam now remains inside and can no longer be seen. Now take another ribbon and thread it through the thin fabric. If you pull on this band, the material contracts and is closed. That leaves the last step, which is the most fun.
Fill
Glue a decorative pompom ribbon to the outer edge and you can finish making the school cone. Now it's time to fill it. A wide variety of things related to school are suitable. A lunch box and various school supplies such as pens, a ruler or paints are just a few ideas. Don't forget the sweets too!
Here you will receivea guide on how to pack them correctly.
For boys
Every child has certain preferences. You can use these when you make the school cone. Here you can see a great example of Batman themed boys. The sugar bag is made of blue felt. You can also make the figure out of felt or draw it on cardboard. If you don't really have artistic talent, you can still use the printer. Find the right motif, print and cut it out and stick it on the sugar cone.
For girls
A very popular topic that the girls in particular will be happy about is that ofIce Queen. To implement this theme, you will need materials in light blue and white, some snowflakes and characters from the film such as Anna and Elsa, which you can also make yourself from construction paper as shown above.
Original idea
You can also expand the classic cone shape and get such an original sugar cone. To do this, you simply make a second cone as a closure and the so-called stabilizing fins (we simply call them supports). Your child will definitely be particularly proud of this sugar cone.
Star Wars
As I said, there are no limits to your imagination. However, if you make the school cone, you have the opportunity to implement a wide variety of ideas instead of having to rely on certain versions that are available to buy. You know your child best. Use this knowledge to create a unique school cone and make the already special day in the life of the little one even more amazing.
