Even beginners can carve pumpkins with these simple steps:

Materials you need:

  • pumpkin: Choose a pumpkin with a smooth surface.
  • Printed template: Download and print a template.
  • tape: Painter's tape or double-sided tape works best.
  • Marker: A water-soluble pen or a light-colored pen.
  • Carving tools:
    • Serrated knife: A sturdy serrated knife for general cutting (e.g. a bread knife or small saw).
    • Smaller knife: A smaller blade for fine work, such as: B. a special pumpkin carving knife.
    • Exact-Messer: For particularly delicate details and precise cuts.
  • spoon or scraper: For hollowing out the pumpkin.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Prepare pumpkin: Cut a lid off the top of the pumpkin. Insert the knife at an angle to prevent the lid from falling into the pumpkin. Remove any seeds and stringy pulp until the pumpkin is clean.
  2. Attach template: Cut off any excess paper from the template and attach it to the pumpkin with tape.
  3. Transfer design:
    • Method A: Use a toothpick or needle to poke small holes along the outline of the template. The holes should be about 3mm apart. Remove the template and, if necessary, sprinkle some flour over the holes to make them more visible.
    • Method B: Cut out the shapes from the template. Attach these to the pumpkin with double-sided tape or thumbtacks and trace the outline with a marker.
  4. Carve pumpkin: Start with the inner parts of the design and work your way outwards. Use the serrated knife for larger areas and the Exacto knife for fine details. If a part breaks off, you can reattach it with a toothpick.
  5. Fine touches: Clean off any marker residue with a damp sponge. Place a light source, such as an LED lamp or tea light, into the pumpkin and replace the lid.

Tips for successful pumpkin carving

  • If you are a beginner, choose simpler designs.
  • Make sure your tools are sharp to achieve clean cuts.
  • Use thumbtacks or painter's tape to securely hold the template in place.
  • Special lighting effect: If you place a candle in the pumpkin, it can have a cool effect of backlighting the subject. In this case, you should consider which areas you will cut out to better show off the animal.
