Build your own grass sofa – find space in the garden

Think carefully in advance about where in the garden you want the sofa. As with most “real”pieces of furniturethe sofa cannot simply be moved later. Once built, it stays where you put it for the time being. Good planning before you build the grass sofa yourself is definitely recommended. However, care is a little easier. You don't have to worry about stains and how to remove them. Care only includes regular trimming and fertilizing the piece of furniture so that the grass can grow lush and green.

Build your own original grass sofa and relax on it

The instructions that we are going to present to you are intended for a sofa measuring 240 x 120 x 120 cm. Get all the materials and instruments ready before you start building. In order to be able to work undisturbed. The materials include the following things:

Building materials

- as 4 cm³ Erde
– 3 bags of potting soil
– 5 plywood panels (120 x 240 cm)
– approx. 30 wooden boards (approx. 2.5 x 8 x 120 cm)
– 6 m² pieces of lawn
– 3 m² chain link fence
– Nails 4 cm long

Sofa instructions

The first thing you should do, as already mentioned, is determine the exact location. Once you have done this, you can and should mark the size of the sofa on the floor. To do this, you should already have existing lawn and other undergrowth. You can, for example, draw the shape in the ground with a stick.

Build frame

You use the wooden boards to build the frame, which you later fill with earth. To make it easier for you to stick the boards into the ground, you should sharpen them at one end. Dig them into the soil about 30 cm deep and a little apart from each other along your marking. They are part of the support you need.

Attach plywood panels

Then attach the panels to the wooden boards with nails. To do this, use the insides of the boards. You can see what the construction should ultimately look like using the sketches.

Form a sofa with soil

So that you can design the sofa, a lot of earth comes into play. This is added to the construction in layers. First fill a height of approx. 30 cm with soil. You then water this layer so that the soil can compress and shape better. Tamp the moist earth. This is followed by the next layer, another watering and tamping again. Repeat until you have completely filled the sofa.

Remove the plates

After all that hard work, you deserve a break. And you will receive this now, because the whole thing should now rest for at least 24 hours. Then we continue with the design. Carefully remove the plywood panels and wooden boards and enjoy the successful shape of the sofa.

Make cosmetic changes yourself

You shouldn't be annoyed by any unevenness you notice. You can now repair these. Do this carefully. If any stones are visible on the surface, we recommend removing them as they may disturb the grass. You simply fill the resulting holes with soil. Then cover the sofa with potting soil and then moisten it with water.

The wire mesh and lawn

To prevent the sofa from falling apart, you can support it with wire mesh. The back and armrests must be supported. Form a U shape so that the wire can wrap around the armrests. Now lay out the pieces of grass so that you can continue building the grass sofa yourself. Spread them on all surfaces of the sofa. Make sure that you press the edges firmly and that a flat surface is created. The individual pieces should be close together and not form straight lines. Instead, place them offset from each other.

Support grass

It may be a little more difficult to permanently attach the grass pieces to the sides of the sofa. Therefore, it is recommended to support it in any way until the roots of the grass have worked their way into the sofa. It is important that the grass can breathe despite the support and receives sufficient light. A wire mesh can again be very useful if you build the grass sofa yourself or you simply use sticks.

Build and maintain your own grass sofa

Now it is important that you water the sofa regularly. This must be adhered to in the first few weeks. After a while you can also remove the supports for the pieces of lawn. If the grass becomes too long, you can cut it at any time. When you design the sofa, you not only get a comfortable seating and lounging area, but also a pretty decoration that will impress everyone.

Design a garden

In this way, you can not only build a grass sofa yourself. Many other pieces of furniture, as well as sculptures, can be created with just a little soil and pieces of grass. The only important thing is that you assemble a structure with the correct shape. Create entire seating areas with a coffee table, armchairs and a sofa, or how about a daybed?

Build a day bed

If you love the feel and smell of the grass, you will especially like the idea for a daybed. It's even easier to implement. You can build a structure yourself or use pallets. Fill the bed box with soil and fertilizer. Then roll out the turf on the lying surface. As an alternative, a ready-made bed frame makes this project even easier. Of course, this piece of furniture also needs to be watered and mowed regularly.

Artificial grass

Don't have time to take care of the lawn or don't have a garden but still want to enjoy the natural look? Then artificial grass is the perfect choice for you. Building your own grass sofa is not suitable if you don't have a garden or on the balcony. Instead, you can cover your furniture with artificial grass and create an original look that can also feel very close to real grass.
