Creating and maintaining a pond in the garden – useful tips for hobby gardeners

A pond in the garden is simply incomparable! It has a calming effect and makes you think for a long time. But before enjoying a beautiful pond in your garden, you need to design it and plan it properly according to the terrain. This is actually difficult and responsible work. Once you've done them, you can look at the world more easily and then let your husband continue working in the garden with the shovel.

First you need to choose the lake type. Whether you want to have a very small garden pond from which the birds drink water, or a larger one where you can watch your little goldfish in the summer, or you want a large lake, one meter deep and over a large area in which a real lake ecosystem is restored - it all depends only on your own preferences and budget.

If you choose the first type, then we can only say that it is a good choice! There are currently good prefabricated ponds available on the market, in specialist shops of course - they are durable and easy to install. So, with minimal effort you will have a small water area in your yard. However, if you want something bigger, then get ready for a lot of work. Professionally, these lakes are designed with special rubberized and UV-resistant coatings. They last for years but are quite expensive. For example, those with polyethylene, as long as it is properly placed and these are covered with basic waterproofing so that they are protected from the sun - you can choose an amateur version. The most difficult option is concrete.

The second decision you need to make is about location. Here you should consider various factors. The natural location of the lake is the lowest part of the garden. Rainwater and mud are collected most there. Therefore, the banks should be raised slightly. It would be nice if the lake was under trees, they also protect the creatures in the water from the strong summer sun. But then in autumn there is a big disadvantage - a lot of withered leaves fall directly into the water and you definitely have to clean it.

The best time for you is spring. Choose a nice, warm day, make a precise plan and go step by step! We have another good tip for you: Combine the pond with a waterfall or fountain, it looks wonderful! Ultimately, you can have a lot of fun with your new garden design.

Don't forget to arrange your garden pond with beautiful stones and aquatic plants, and inside, just in the middle, can be the water lilies. The following fish are suitable for pond inhabitants: carp and goldfish. Some turtle owners also want to house them in the pond for the summer. However, these animals are very adept at climbing over the fence and we escape, their co-cultivation with fish ends badly for the fish. All owners of smaller ponds also need to think about how and in what condition you will leave your pond over the winter. Of course, this depends heavily on your climate conditions. It's best to get advice from your specialist! So, are you now convinced that you need a small lake in your garden? Then grab a pencil and make a project! Next spring is coming soon!
