The lawn is an important area in the garden. It should always look well-groomed so that the garden generally looks attractive. But since it spreads quickly, boundaries must be set that separate it from beds. Lawn edges are very suitable for this purpose. We have prepared some great examples for you of designing the lawn edge in the garden, as well as a selection of materials that are often used for this. Choose any option for your garden design and create a neat garden.
Design the lawn edge
But it's not just the lawn that can invade the bed. If you have the two areas, i.e. lawn andPflanzenbeet, plan, keep in mind that your decorative plants and flowers can also grow over the edge of the lawn over time. This is not necessarily visually unattractive. However, this way the plants can be damaged when mowing the lawn and you certainly don't want that. Leave enough space between the first row of plants and the edging.
English lawn edging in the garden
If you like the natural look in the garden, then the English lawn edging is the right option for you. No bed edging or anything similar is used here. Instead, the lawn merges directly into the bed. As beautiful as this variant is, maintaining this shape is more difficult than with other options. The border has to be renewed or reshaped every few weeks. For this purpose, the lawn is almost cut off. For a straight bed, this can be done quite quickly with a few tools.
You can use a wooden board or another straight tool to create an equally straight lawn edge in the garden. Place it along the bed so that the excess part of the lawn is behind it. With a spade or a lawn edger you can then easily cut off anything that is unnecessary and then remove the remains.
Paved flowerbed border
Designing the lawn edge is much easier if you use paving stones for this purpose. You can choose models made of concrete or stone, which are available in suitable shapes. Depending on the shape of the bed, the paving stones are also usedBeeteinfassungchosen.
Easy-care version
If you want it to be more romantic than concrete, choose stones made of granite, clinker or brick. If joints are created through which the grass can penetrate again, this must be taken care of every two years: Lay so-called offsets to prevent this.
How to lay stones?
Laying the stones isn't that difficult either. First, proceed as with the English lawn edging in the garden. If you have just cut the lawn, you need to add a small trench between the lawn and the bed into which the paving stones fit perfectly. Ultimately they should be one to two centimeters higher than the lawn. Fill any empty spaces with sand and soil (soil between the stone and the lawn and sand between the stones) and tamp everything down well.
It can be difficult to create a straight line with the paving stones. But there is a simple yet practical trick you can use. Simply stretch a string along the bed to use for orientation. In this way you can also determine the height wonderfully and make it even.
Metal lawn edging
Do you like the idea of English lawn edging in the garden, but find it too time-consuming to maintain? Then metal lawn edging is a good alternative. They create a perfect boundary, but are nowhere near as noticeable as the paving stones. The choice also depends on your taste and the look you want to achieve. If you find the visible border decorative, choose the stones.
The metal lawn edging is available in aluminum, stainless steel or galvanized steel. Since the elements are flexible, they can be used to perfectly frame not only straight beds, but also rounded ones. The width can also be chosen differently. If the bed and lawn are on the same level, 10 cm is completely sufficient. If there is a difference in height, you can support the higher bed with a 30 cm wide metal lawn edge.
Another advantage of metal is that you don't have to dig to get them into the ground. In most cases, the narrow material can easily be pounded into the ground with a hammer. This also saves a lot of time and effort. It is best to use a rubber mallet to avoid damaging the metal. If you don't have a rubber mallet, place a piece of wood on top of the metal as a base.
Plastic for the bed border
A similar variant is a model made of plastic or rubber. Since mostly recycled materials are used, this variant is not only environmentally friendly, but also cheaper. However, an artificial model also has the disadvantage that a small trench has to be prepared.
In addition, over time the material can no longer withstand the weather. The parts above the earth's surface become brittle and more brittle due to constant exposure to the hot sun. The parts of the lawn edge in the garden below the ground are in turn stressed by the moisture in the soil and can rot over time.
When digging, pay attention to the correct depth. It is important that the height is estimated so that the plastic or rubber cannot be damaged during mowing. For this purpose, the lawn edge is adjusted either to the height of the lawn or, in the case of a higher bed, to its height.
A final cut
No matter which lawn edge you choose in the garden, an additional cut at the edge of the lawn after mowing will always be necessary. The reason for this is that the lawn mower cannot reach the edge. The grass trimmer doesn't affect the metal bed border, so you can use it wonderfully in this case.
If you have chosen a different material, it is best to use scissors. A particularly practical solution for this manual work is the cordless grass shears. This shortens working hours significantly and generally makes work easier.
Wide lawn edge
If you use wider stones or slabs for the lawn edge, you can also create wonderfully narrow garden paths on which you can walk through the garden. This way you also protect the lawn. In addition, the wide lines that are created make the garden appear neater and more well-kept.
Wavy shapes
Make the bed any shape you like and then separate it from the lawn in any way you like. The border can even look quite ornate, as is the case in this garden. Incidentally, a concrete bed border was used, which will change even any skeptic's opinion about the material.
The advantage of concrete is that it is available in a wide variety of designs. This way you can quickly and easily find the right model. There is also a wider choice when it comes to colors, so the boring, gray look of concrete is a thing of the past.
The lawn edge does not necessarily have to separate a classic bed from the lawn. Other decorative areas can also be protected from invasive lawns in this way. In this way, the contrast between the materials and structures is perfectly framed and additionally highlighted.
