The new super smartphone from Samsung: Galaxy X rumors and facts

Rumors about the new Samsung Galaxy X have been circulating for months. It should be the first smartphone with a foldable screen. That's why everyone is at least a little curious to know what it will look like and what it can offer. The Consumer Electronic Show (CES) took place in Las Vegas from January 9th to 12th and at this event the new super smartphone or the prototype was presented, but behind closed doors and only to a select group. You can read all the information about details and technical data that have already been announced here.

The new super smartphone from Samsung: what do we know about it?

As recently as 2015 there were rumors that Samsung would...a new model with a foldable display. At least that's what the concept videos and patent applications have revealed. The South Korean company remained silent for a long time and only made an official statement in September 2017: There will soon be a foldable smartphone. The South Korean site has the latest news about the new SamsungET Newsbetrayed. She reports that an official prototype was presented at CES 2018. The manufacturer is obviously in the final stages of developing the Galaxy X. It is clearly a last-generation smartphone with the first foldable display. Apparently two variants were presented – a model with an inward-folding display and one with an outward-folding display. It should have a diagonal of 7.3 inches and according to the report, it will go on sale in 2018. However, the eventual release date was already postponed to 2019 by Samsung CEO Koh Dong-Jin, then put back again. Maybe it will take some time until the great smartphone comes onto the market.

Every new technology product has a long journey before it hits the market. It must be tested several times and receive certification from various authorities. Only then can it be sold. This also applies to a great smartphone like the Galaxy X. There was a rumor that it was registered with the National Radio Research Agency under the name “SM G88N0”. However, Samsung has announced that it is a different device. Then the Chinese media ensured that Samsung had almost completed its work on a new model with a foldable OLED display and the first prototypes were a fact.

Although the official presentation at the world's largest entertainment technology trade fair, CES, only took place in front of a select audience, the first technical data about Galaxy X came to light. The foldable and unfoldable OLED display with a 7.3-inch diagonal should be as flexible as paper and can be folded at least 200,000 times. The radius at the bending point should be 0.1 millimeters inwards and 0.5 millimeters outwards. However, the company has not yet revealed what exactly Samsung's new model will look like.

After the release of Apple X, Samsung boss Koh Dong Jin perhaps felt compelled to present something new and revolutionary. So he has presented the prospects of the foldable display, but an exact date has not been set as to when Galaxy X will appear. Currently “some problems” need to be solved and everything is unclear. However, one can expect that a limited number will be produced first to obtain initial feedback and then later a mass-market product will appear on the market. This is what the South Koreans did with the first Galaxy Note, the first smartphone with an edge display, which was the predecessor of theGalaxy S6is. Maybe that's exactly what Samsung's chief engineer had in mind when he said that display technology wouldn't be fully developed until 2019.

When will Samsung Galaxy X be available?

It is impossible to say with certainty when Samsung's new super smartphone will be available and what it will look like. However, the group will probably present something like this. Little is known about the technical specifications. But one thing is clear: the display will be the showpiece. This is probably a 7.3-inch, 4K resolution, 18:9 borderless display, which is an innovation in itself. The clear highlight is that it can be folded in half. As an ultra-premium device, the new super smartphone will be priced at over 1,000 euros. However, this has not been confirmed.

The most important question aboutthe new model Samsungis whether it's a foldable display or a foldable smartphone. A drawing recently appeared on a Dutch website depicting a device, presumably the Galaxy X, consisting of two connected screens. If necessary, it is bent over and one half is folded onto the other. It remains to be seen whether the smartphone pictured is really from Samsung.

With a screen as large and a powerful processor as the last models presented by the South Koreans, Galaxy X should serve as a tablet that can also be used as a smartphone when folded. According to the websiteAndroid SoulThere will be two variants – a smaller Galaxy X1 model and a larger Galaxy X1 Plus. The more powerful version should be operated with the current Android 7.0 Nougat, while Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow is still installed on the smaller version.

Most speculation predicts a release date in 2019. This assumption was based on the fact that edge-to-edge screens are now selling very well and only when the demand for edge-to-edge displays drops will foldable ones come onto the market. During this time, technology continues to develop and improve. That's what analyst Chunk Wok Seok has in mindThe Korea Heraldcommunicated in a conversation.

Samsung actually also had other ideas for alternatives to the conventional smartphone display, for example a display that can be rolled out and rolled up. Apple, Lenovo, LG and Microsoft are also working intensively in this direction. Maybe this is the future for future generations of smartphones. So wait and see who breaks out with the revolutionary model first.
