Mala Emde in the big Elle interview

Elle: Why should everyone hear Keith Jarrett's improvisations?

Mala Emde:There is music that makes rooms disappear, reality reveals us as if our feet are lifting from the earth for a mini second. That may sound strange, but if this music weren't crazy, would it have become such a world success?

What was your first encounter with the music of the pianist?

M.E.:I locked myself into my studio in Paris; I didn't want to create any disturbances from everyday life and a pure art space. Then I let the piece speak to me. What did it say? Everything that cannot be words, everything that only the silence can say. For example, what you hear when you get goose bumps.

What else do you like to hear?

M.E.:I like individual encounters with music, not a specific genre. It's like people. If I like a piece and make one side swing in me, then I like it. That ranges from "Semele" from Handel to Kae Tempests "Cockney-Rap", from Sophie Hunter's ballads to Patti Smith-my heroine.

What ability Vera Brandes would you like?

M.E.:Vera makes things that others think is impossible. This is a superpower that I would like to have.

What makes you dance?

M.E.:What a nice question. When I'm happy, I dance. When I'm sad, I dance. When I'm a stranger, I dance. When I'm with my best friends, I dance like a fool.

What does it look like when you learn your texts?

M.E.:I walk through the city like an insane and talk to myself.

What are you most looking forward to when it gets warmer again?

M.E.:I love the first spring days when everyone is in love and a shimmering atmosphere is in the air. The thick down jacket is replaced by your favorite jacket, you can sit outside and go to the open -air cinema.

If you had a time machine: where would you travel?

M.E.:In the future! And there my "old I" ask what is important in life. The answer would probably be: defends democracy, it is not perfect, but the best we have. Apply sunscreen, your skin will thank you. And take the time for museums before breakfast, a dance on the carpet, music in the morning, books on the train and films on the big screen.
