Timekeeper: Make the most of your time management with the new chronograph from Michael Kors

Sometimes the to-do list is full to the brim and deadlines are getting closer and closer: In such situations you would like to stop time. Press stop from now on – a stop function for life. More time that we could spend with our loved ones, sleeping five minutes longer or taking a quick breather from the marathon of appointments, but above all one thing - with more time for ourselves. Sounds philosophically profound, but the question is essential. Because focusing and prioritizing helps enormously with time management. Knowing which task to tackle first makes the difference between success and failure and, more importantly, contributes to your own well-being.

Chronograph: When would you use the stop function for life - if there was one?

Of course there is no stop function for life but with a chronograph you can measure and stop time. The essentials summarized: A chronograph is a watch with a stop function. So far, so simple. This means that any length of time can be measured with such a clock. This is not only important for sports, but can also make everyday life easier for you. The following equation: 25 minutes of concentrated work, followed by a five-minute break, and after four intervals a longer break of 30 minutes. Taking longer breaks increases concentration and improves workflow. Typical chronographs that are equipped with two so-called pushers above and below the crown are suitable for measuring time. The stop seconds hand is started and stopped with the pusher at the two o'clock position. Resetting to zero is done with the pusher at the four o'clock position. The stopped time in seconds is displayed centrally on the large dial. The small auxiliary displays, also called totalizers, show the time in minutes, hours and seconds.

The creation of the chronograph

The chronograph is not only an indispensable function for watch lovers and collectors, but is often part of the basic functionality (also known as a complication) of a modern watch. The chronograph function was invented, i.e. starting, stopping and resetting time measurement in order to be able to measure time periods precisely and independently of the normal second hand.

For years it was mistakenly assumed that Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec invented the chronograph. It is said to have been founded in 1821 by the French King Louis XVIII. have been commissioned to develop a function that can accurately measure time in horse racing. His invention was a device that dripped ink onto a rotating dial to show how much time had passed. He called it “chronograph” – a combination of the Greek words chronos (time) and graphein (to write).

However, in 2013, a pocket watch by Louis Moinet from 1816 was found. The pocket watch with three subdials and a pusher could measure time periods with an accuracy of up to an astonishing 1/60th of a second. Moinet was the inventor of the chronograph not only in terms of time (his pocket watch is a full five years older), but also visually - his watch already has a lot in common with the appearance and function of today's chronographs.
