The holidays are just around the corner and you're not in the cozy Christmas mood yet? The only thing that helps is the complete program: Xmas jazz for your ears, a walk to the nearest mulled wine stand - and of course a rewatch of your favorite one.
The best thing: Some holiday movies not only provide a cozy atmosphere, but also the perfect styling inspiration, and the time between years. We'll show you our absolute favorite looks from “Love Doesn't Need a Vacation”, “Home Alone”, “Bridget Jones” and Co. - which are in theConveniently, they are also very trendy. Let's go!
Outfit inspiration for the holidays: The 6 most beautiful looks from our favorite winter film classics
1. Cameron Diaz in “Love Doesn’t Take a Vacation”
Yes, we all know and love Cameron Diaz's dark brown leather coat with the flared fur collar that the rich film producer wears when she has to set off on foot - in high heels and loaded with suitcases - to the small British cottage because the taxi driver quits the service has.
However, our favorite look from the romantic Christmas film classic “Love Needs No Holidays”, in which Amanda Woods aka Cameron Diaz and Iris aka Kate Winslet swap houses over the holidays, is different. On the first night, when Cameron Diaz's character is bored out of her mind without her usual work stress until the smart Jude Law knocks on her door, the actress is wearing the perfect outfit for the time "between the years" - when the family Stress passes and we just want to fall between the pillows with a book.
A timeless white knit cardigan, matching top and hat and gray flowy sweatpants. And gray sweats, as anyone who has been on Pinterest lately knows, isthecozy winter trend of the year. Cameron Diaz had tucked her sweatpants into a pair of classic light brown Ugg boots, which provide extra warmth but also trend factor - because the 2010s comeback in fashion is already in full swing.
2. Renée Zellweger in “Bridget Jones”
“Bridget Jones” is the epitome of the “Frazzled English Women” aesthetic that has been trending on TikTok in recent years. In short, the aesthetic combines typical Y2K clothing with a pinch of “cottage core”. A little old-fashioned patterns, lots of colors, knits, crochet details, claw-clip hairstyles with a few strands falling out: these are just a few fashion staples of the “Frazzled English Women,” which Renée Zellweger also portrayed in “Bridget Jones ” which provides the perfect inspiration.
At home and on the evening before Christmas, the “English Frazzled English Woman” of course wears a slightly kitschy, old-school two-piece pajama set with a print pattern. On Christmas Day itself, however, she chooses a vest with old-fashioned floral embroidery. There are also bonus trend points for Bridget for her preference for red, which will once again be seen everywhere in the street style of fashion influencers in winter 2024: whether as a scarf, socks, stockings or a small bow in the hair. There are further trend bonus points if the accessories are bourdeaux colored.
3. Saoirse Ronan in “Little Women”
And speaking of small details and red: Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet don't just have the almost love match in the Greta Gerwig version of "Little Women" - based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott about four sisters and their very different lives Jo and Laurie, but also perfected the art of the red scarf. The perfect Xmas styling inspiration - because hardly any accessory enhances a simple Christmas look, such as a little black dress or a blouse, as quickly as an elegant scarf with interesting patterns and complementary colors.
4. Catherine O'Hara in “Home Alone”
This holiday look inspiration is a little less obvious than Cameron Diaz in "Love Doesn't Take a Holiday" but still perfectly captures the fashion trends of the times. We're talking about Catherine O'Hara in the Christmas comedy “Home Alone,” in which a family accidentally leaves their son behind on a holiday trip.
And while one could debate how one could be so clumsy as to forget one's own child, one thing is beyond question: the timelessly elegant sense of style of Kevin's mother, who is already wearing the outerwear trend in the 1990 film, the fashion pros have rediscovered for themselves in winter 2024: mocha-colored wool coats.
5. Meg Ryan in “Harry und Sally”
Admittedly: “Harry and Sally” is not a classic Christmas film, as Christmas plays more of a supporting role. Nevertheless, important scenes of the romcom take place during the holidays, such as the film's climax at a New Year's Eve party where, after years of protesting that the two are "just friends," Harry confesses his love to Sally in an iconic monologue. And our favorite look moment from the film is actually the most famous one this time: Meg Ryan's unbeatable combination of red cable-knit sweater and black mini skirt. Classic, festive and totally cozy.
6. Sarah Jessica Parker in “Family Stone”
“The Stone Family” is a Christmas film that (twenty years after its first release) divides opinion. For some, the family chaos that Everett Stone sets in motion by introducing his girlfriend Meredith Morton to the family over the holidays is pure entertainment - for others it is a kind of retraumatization. Because as sharp and funny as the dialogue may be written, you can't really avoid noticing that the premise of the film - business woman from the city doesn't fit in with the intellectual family because she wears manicures and doesn't read the "right" books - today seems pretty outdated. A circumstance that we also have to thank for Barbie mania.
What might be less divisive than the plot, however, are the looks that Sarah Jessica Parker's character Meredith wears over the course of the film. Our absolute favorite: her two-piece Co-Ord costume for the charades evening, which perfectly combines elegance and comfort with its timeless cut and dark gray business core trend with timeless cut and material (we suspect after repeated rewatches: wool).
7. Heike Makatsch in “Actually… Love”
Heike Makatsch in “Love Actually” is perhaps the most hated person in a Christmas romcom. After all, she is the character that the married father, played by Alan Rickman, falls in love with, which ultimately leads to one of the saddest Christmas movie scenes ever: Emma Thompson standing in her bedroom crying after finding out that her husband is someone else bought an expensive piece of jewelry.
But: Firstly, the hatred of film fans should be directed towards the character of the (almost) fraudster – Alan Rickman. And secondly, Heike Makatsch's character at least delivers one good thing - an impeccable pre-Christmas office look. A slightly flared, mottled skirt with a tight-fitting black turtleneck. Add a few red lips and you have what is probably the simplest holiday look ever. Plus, turtlenecks are currently making a comeback!
