But despite the hordes of tourists, the island still has a few hidden gems to offer - and of course. Our tip: Rent yourself in one of the fantastic hotels, for example in Ubud or Uluwatu, and explore the numerous highlights from therewith the scooter. In this article we will take you to the secret corners of the island and, in addition to these Bali insider tips, we will also tell you ours.
1. Amed: the original paradise in the east of Bali
Diving fan or nature addict? Then off to Amed! Amed is a small fishing village on the east coast of Bali that is not yet overrun by the crowdsand has a chill atmosphere. On top of that, Amed is known for its fascinating diving spots, including the famous wreck of the “USAT Liberty” on the coast of Tulamben, which you can reach after a short scooter ride. Alternatively, you can also go snorkeling in the crystal clear water. A hike through the surrounding villages and lush rice fields around Amed is also worthwhile.
2. Jatiluwih rice fields: the dreamy UNESCO World Heritage Site
The rice terraces of Jatiluwih in the central highlands of the island are somewhat overshadowed by the famous rice fields of Tegallalang. To be honest, we don't know why, because they are simply incredibly beautiful. The region has even been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It's best to make oneearly in the morning when the fog still lies over the fields. Or you can rent a bike and explore the area on well-developed paths.
3. Batur Volcano: up to the summit at sunrise
Get up at three in the morning and? Okay, that doesn't sound so tempting at first. But it's worth it, I promise. The view of the still active volcano, the crater lake and the surrounding mountains is absolutely spectacular at sunrise, when everything is bathed in golden light. The hike itself is not particularly demanding and is easily doable even for beginner hikers. However, the climb is quite steep, so you should be prepared for that.
4. The Ubud Monkey Forest: an absolute must-see
Okay, admittedly, the Udud monkey forest is no longer a real insider tip. But the forest is so amazing that you just have to see it. The nature reserve is home to a large number of macaques living in the wild. Anyone who hikes through the forest can not only observe them up close, but also marvel at ancient temple complexes and sacred sites in the middle of the dense jungle.
5. Balangan Beach: the hidden beach in the south
Balangan Beach is located in the south of Bali and is one of thethe island. If Kuta and Seminyak are too hectic for you, you should definitely make a detour here. The crystal clear water and the fine sand are simply fantastic. You can also surf very well at Balangan Beach. If possible, you should definitely stay until sunset. Then the beach and surrounding cliffs are bathed in a mystical, golden light.
6. Goa Rang Reng Waterfall: a hidden treasure in the jungle
The Goa Rang Reng Waterfall may not be the most impressive waterfall in Bali, but it is one of the most unknown. Hidden in the jungle near the village of Tegallalang, it is perfect for anyone looking for a real adventure in nature. You cannot go there alone, but only with one of the guides at the entrance to the waterfall. But only 25 tourists get to enjoy this every day. So it's worth coming early because that's when the light is at its best.
7. Nusa Lembogan und Nusa Ceningan: Balis unbekannte Schwestern
Nusa Lembogan and Nusa Ceningan are two small islands off the south coast of Bali that are best known for their beautiful beaches, which are much more relaxed than Bali itself. What can you do here? Snorkeling or diving, for example. Or you just enjoy escaping the hustle and bustle of Bali for a few days and reading a good book. Both islands can be easily reached by boat from Bali.
8. Sweet Orange Walk: a walk not to be missed
Just a stone's throw from Ubud's busy main street lies the Sweet Orange Walk. Another world – in the middle of Ubud. We walk along an avenue of palm trees past rice farmers, and every now and then fresh coconuts are sold right along the way. The starting point of the walk is “The Paon International Restaurant”, behind which a small path leads through the rice fields. You should definitely stop by Sweet Orange Warung and order one of the delicious curries and a fresh fruit juice.
9. Lemukih Water Slide: Adventure in the Jungle
Around the village of Lemukih you are surrounded by a Bali postcard panorama. There's an impressive mix of waterfalls, rice terraces, jungle, springs - and a natural waterslide that flows into a clear river. It is about 50 meters long and is really fun. You sit on an old scooter tire, get water shoes and a helmet and off you go. How to get there: Getting there is a bit complicated. There are guides on the street who will try to sell you on an overpriced tour, but you can also visit the slide on your own. Enter “Warung Kubu” (Google Maps) as your destination. At some point a water slide sign will show you where to turn left. Then follow the road towards Water Slide.
