If you want to buy hair curlers for styling at home, you shouldn't just go to the nearest drugstore and buy the curlers that are currently on sale. Even though you can probably create a temporary wave in your hair with most curlers, there are big differences.
To find the right curlers for you, you should first ask yourself what end result you want. How should they?Curls with curlerslook? Would you rather have small and curly curls or would you rather have big, voluminous and curved waves? Your hair structure and the condition of your hair also play an important role.
For example, you haveand very straight hair where most styling doesn't last for an hour? Or do you have slightly frizzy and ratherthat you don't have to wash or restyle for several days after the hairdresser because it still looks like it's just after your appointment? All of this should be taken into account when choosing the right hair curlers.
How do I choose the right curlers for me?
We will introduce you to different curlers and of course also reveal which hair and desired styling they are particularly suitable for.
Papilotten
It's quite possible that you'll find Papilottes in your grandmother's bathroom, because they are a true classic when it comes to hair curlers. The quite thin rollers made of foam or rubber have a wire in the middle. After winding up each strand, you can simply bend it up so that the papilotte and the strand remain fixed to the top of your head.
Because of their rather small diameter, papilotts are particularly suitable for really small and curly curls. Since you usually don't need additional clips or barrettes to hold the curlers in place, papilotts are also wonderful asCurlers overnightsuitable.
If you veryIf you have problems that are difficult to take on a different shape, you should use a hairdryer to add some heat.
Papilotts can do it themselvescan be used because their small diameter does not require particularly long strands. But be aware that a real head of curls can await you in the mirror when you take the rollers out again. You can find a practical set of papilots, for exampleon Amazon.
Wide curlers
If you prefer to style your hair with larger waves and a particularly beautiful swing, you can use wide curlers and go for itlarge curlers for volumecare for. The larger the diameter of the winder, the larger the shaft.
If theHair curlers largethey are more suitable for medium to long hair. Unless you wear oneBob hairstyle- then you can also style your hair with wide curlers.
You won't be able to achieve real curls with jumbo rollers, but rather beach waves and a beautiful one. You can find wide hair curlers in the set, for exampleon Amazon.
Spiralwickler
Significantly more curlers are required if you use spiral curlers. As the name suggests, every single winder here has the shape of a small spiral. The respective strand of hair is rolled up into the spaces between the spiral and finally fixed. You can use spiral curlers to create very small, corkscrew-shaped curls in your hair.
If youIf you want to style your hair, you can try sleeping with the spiral rollers. However, since most products are made of solid plastic, it might be more comfortable to use oneinstead of letting them air dry overnight.
Especially if you have few and rather thin hair, spiral curlers can be an option. If you have long and a lot of hair, you would spend quite a long time using this product because the individual strands are only wound thinly.
Flockwickler/Samtwickler
Flock curlers, also often called velvet curlers, have the advantage that the curlers have many small holes so that the wound hair can dry particularly well and quickly.
Most curlers of this type are made of metal, so they quickly warm up from the heat of the hairdryer and can therefore shape the curls particularly well into the hair. However, they are often covered with soft velvet so that your hair and scalp are protected.
Once you have twisted a strand onto the winder, you still have to secure it with a clip or a holding pin for winders (availableon Amazon) attach. The curlers themselves come in different sizes, so depending on the desired result you can choose small or large flock curlers (see for exampleon Amazon) use. This makes the rollers suitable for all hair types.
Velcro roller/adhesive roller
With Velcro or adhesive rollers, you practically don't need any clips to fix them. Their somewhat bristly surface is designed to stick to the head like a burdock.
Wercould handle it very well. Who rather? You should be careful - Velcro rollers can snag on your hair, making it uncomfortable to untangle them to unwind the strands.
You can find Velcro curlers with a variety of diameters, so depending on the curl shape you want, you can use large or very small ones. But there are also practical sets with different sizes so that you get a particularly lively styling result (for example, there ison Amazon).
Perm curler
Maybe you'll have one for yourselfHave it done at the hairdresser, or you've seen it done in the salon with another customer: Perm rollers are relatively small and become a little narrower in the middle. The wound strand is fixed directly to the winder with an elastic band.
A perm has very small curls, which means that home perm rollers (without any chemicals) are particularly suitable for short hair. If your hair is at least ten centimeters long, you can use perm rollers (availableon Amazon) are already using very well.
If you have a lot of long hair, you should note that you really need a lot of the small rollers.
Heating rollers
If you like to save time and have curl-resistant hair, you could have good success with heated rollers. They are heatedelectric hair curlers,so that you can immediately shape the coiled strand with heat.
Of course, the ends of the curlers don't get warm, so you can easily touch them, although the curlers should only get warm and not hot.
Some heat rollers even have integrated ionic technology that is supposed to help against static hair (available from Remington, for exampleCurrently even reduced at Amazon for just 30 euros). A set usually includes different sizes of heat rollers, so that you can achieve a particularly natural styling result.
Foam rollers
Foam hair curlers have the advantage that the soft foam really doesn't pull or get caught in your hair. So if you are sensitive to pulling or have very frizzy hair, foam rollers may be a good choice for you.
Due to the soft material, you may be able to create gentle waves. You won't be able to achieve small ringlets with foam rollers. Depending on the length of your hair and the desired result, you can find the rollers in different sizes and practical sets (for exampleon Amazon).
How to use hair curlers correctly? 7 steps to the perfect curls
As is often the case, hair curlers require good hair preparation. The better you prepare her for styling with rollers, the happier you will be with the results. You can also greatly influence the durability of your curls. We'll tell you the most important steps to conjure up beautiful curls in your hair with curlers.
Step 1: Gently wash your hair
Wash your hair in the shower as usual. Make sure you don't use a shampoo that is too heavy. Gentle cleaning is completely sufficient. It is also very important that the conditioner is not a very rich product.
Care is important, after all, your hair needs to stay with yoube taken care of and shine beautifully. But under no circumstances should they be weighed down.
Step 2: Heat Protection
If you want to dry your hair that will be wound up later with a hairdryer or use heat rollers, your hair definitely needs one. To do this, dry your hair very lightly with a towel, apply the heat protectant to your hair and comb it through once.
Step 3: Setting agent
In order for the hair to take on the desired shape, you should use a setting agent. Either a light mousse (available from Wella, for exampleon Amazon) or a slightly fixing sea salt spray - for example if you don't want to use a mousse.
Work the product of your choice into your hair and knead the hair, preferably overhead.
Incidentally, curl creams are not ideal for styling with curlers, as they tend to weigh down the hair and make it slightly oily. But for the curls we need very fluffy and “light” hair.
Step 4: Lightly blow-dry
You should only carry out this step if you have a particularly large amount of heavy hair. A light blow-dry can then help you to twist your hair easily onto the curlers and allow it to dry on the curlers.
If you have thin hair and little hair, you can skip this step. It is only important that your hair is slightly dried before wrapping and is no longer dripping with moisture.
Step 5: Unwind the curlers
Then divide your hair into different sections; Depending on how much hair you have, this can be between four and eight sections. And then let's get started - but how do you use curlers and how do you properly put curlers in your hair?
Start at the bottom of your head, twist strand by strand onto the rollers of your choice and, when you reach the top, secure them to your head with a clip or rubber band (depending on the product). Do this with all sections one after the other until all the hair is wound up.
Make sure that the tips of the strands are not kinked, but lie neatly on the roller. For a particularly natural result, you can alternately twist the strands outwards and inwards onto the rollers. It usually looks best around your face if you twist the strands away from your face and onto the rollers.
Step 6: Dry hair
Now you can either dry your hair with gentle heat or on a low setting with your hairdryer - ideally with the diffuser attachment. Or you may want to let your hair air dry and/or leave the curlers in your hair overnight.
Step 7: The Finish
Before you unscrew the rollers, you can use a light hairspray again. Then start rolling the rollers out of your hair again at the bottom of your head. Only when all the curlers are out can you run your fingers through the hair and loosen everything up nicely and shake it up slightly.
As a finish, you can use a light hairspray again so that the curls keep their shape for as long as possible.
How long do you leave curlers in?
No matter which drying option you choose, your hair should be at least 90 percent dry before you remove the rollers from your hair. How long this takes depends entirely on your hair length and amount.
At a glance: Advantages of hair curlers
It's no wonder that even after decades, many women still rely on styling with curlers. Because the styling tool for curls has a number of advantages:
- Less heat damage:In contrast to a curling iron, you use significantly less heat on your hair with curlers. It is well known that too much heat leads to heat damage to your hair, which of course we generally want to avoid.
- Individual Styling:Thanks to the different materials and sizes of curlers, you can style the appropriate curls in your hair depending on the occasion or mood.
- Time saving:Once you get the hang of it, you can wind your hair pretty quickly. If you then let the rollers air dry, you can style your hair as if you were casually doing it. Styling with a straightener or curling iron can take significantly longer.
- More volume:You can create more volume in your hair with curlers. Whether a gentle oneor small, curly curls - your hair can look beautifully voluminous.
