Travel suitcase test: We put 4 check-in models to the test

Travel suitcase test: Our honest conclusion about 4 check-in models from Horizn Studios, Eastpak, Carl Friedrik and Tumi

Experience the travel destination, memories and culture. Everything fantastically beautiful, but of course it takes the right one before it startsTravel suitcases.Finding that is not that easy, because the needs and demands are as individual as the travelers themselves.

What makes the whole thing even more difficult: an infinite selection of models, colors and shapes mixed with almost futuristic add-ons. Next question: plane, train or car? The types of travel are diverse - which is also noticeable when choosing the travel suitcases. Because depending on which means of transport is placed on, there are advantages and disadvantages. For example, hard shell cases are best suited for the flight, since they are considered particularly stable, and suitcases, with four roles, are known for simple handling (especially on smooth surfaces as you have at the airport). Depending on how heavy the luggage will be, the stability of the handle is also crucial. You see -it’s a lot!

So that you have a little easier when buying, 4 glamor editors haveCooking suitcase in check-in sizesFrom popular manufacturers: tested inside and summarized all the details for you. If you are currently looking for a Suitcase that is often a long-term investment, every test report is helpful when making a purchase decision.

Which criteria do I have to pay attention to when buying?

In addition to the properties of the travel case itself, the price plays the greatest role in buying. The price range is enormous and you can buy a model for both 20 and several thousand euros. But it does not always mean “better”, because in the end it depends on the quality, frequency of use, material quality, but also packing itself. For example, if you always have to put yourself on the suitcase to close, you have to expect that the locking mechanism may be overdated and therefore gives up the mind faster. This is where the two most most asked questions about suitcase buying.

Which contact points for a suitcase purchase are there?

Online or in the store, when you buy the suitcase, all options are open to you. Many luggage manufacturers: Inside you can find in department stores as well as for multiretailers: inside. They often also have their own shops in which you can get detailed advice. Basically, it is advisable to look at different models in advance in stores and roll in order to get a feeling for handling. So you can also create a kind of own checklist with criteria that are important to you. This includes, for example, things such as rolling speed, volume, feel or handle. If you know what you want, you can also look for offers online or strike on action days like Black Friday and wait specifically for discount offers such as the glamor shopping week.

Travel suitcase material: hard shell or soft shell case?

As already mentioned, hard shell cases made of aluminum or plastic are more stable, but they can have a high weight. Soft shell cases (often made of leather, nylon or other solid fabrics) are more formible and allow it to pack more if necessary, but are more sensitive and not so well protected against moisture or “unshaven”. Here, too, a decision should be made depending on the individual travel behavior.

Hand luggage and I have never been a big love story. I just like to pack 1000 outfit options too. You have to be prepared for every eventuality when traveling. I choose Horizn Studios in our test for a very specific reason: For me it is the (!) Hype case brand par excellence. Not incredibly expensive, but super -style, modern and with high quality promise. And I have to say that the suitcase kept that through and through for me.

When I packed, I like the division and very important, it can be squeezed in a lot. Pack “without limit” - I love yes. My highlight are the 360-degree rolls. The suitcase can really be rolled and is extremely quiet, so you don't have the feeling that you make your way to the airport at half past three in the morning. In our test phase lasting several weeks, I was really in another country every week, so I took the suitcase in car, train and plane. Although fully packed, it worked really easy because the case is really light. So easy that I could always wear it myself. The integrated power bank is a real lifesaver if the sockets do not work again on the train. It is removable what is ideal for flights. As someone with a preference for minimalism, I am a big fan of the clean design of the Suitcases. By the way, the look of my check-in is the “Glossy Finish” from Horizn. Looks very nice, but I would say that it is a little more scratched than the matt version.

For me I went to Paris for a week, together with my partner and friend: inside. Usually a small hand luggage case is enough for me, but since I had injured myself before the trip and wore crutches, I couldn't push the suitcase myself. Then Carl Friedrik's big check-in case came just right. My partner and I were both stowed our luggage in it and still had enough scope to take a few books with them. Since I plan my outfits on vacation every day, I had no problem with the place - also in pairs. One disadvantage: the suitcase is quite difficult. We drove to Paris by train and sometimes needed help to get the suitcase into the luggage shelves.

An advantage on the suitcase is definitely the quiet bikes - with my old, shaky specimen, I sometimes get crazy about all the noises. And of course the check-in is incredibly stable. With our - but partly adventurous - trip with Deutsche Bahn, the suitcase did not get any scratches and still looks like new. Especially for longer air travel, I would recommend the suitcase without exception - on train travel should definitely be tested beforehand how well you can wear the suitcase. There is no relief on escalators and elevators in some train stations (VA abroad).

Senior Cultural Editor Ursula Schmied testet den “19 Degree Extended Trip Expandable” von Tumi

The “19 degree Extended Trip Expandable” by Tumi packed

I usually travel with backpack or a travel bag. When was the last time I was traveling with a suitcase? I don't know, but on oneI take the tumi “19 Dregree” with me. First impression: so much space for neat packing! A suitcase com party can be closed with a zipper, the other with compression belts that hold everything together. Here everything really has space that is on an extensive trip. So, fixed summer dresses from the closet, sandals stowed in the suitcase - and off to the airport. I packed sneakers and rain jacket (you never know!) In the zipper compartment, where, fortunately, there is also enough space for dirty laundry on the journey home.

I like to be late - even if I fly around half the world. It is all the more important for me that the suitcase does not stop unnecessarily, but rolls like clockwork - and the “19 degree” does that. Although the Tumi model weighs five kilos, you don't notice them. Thanks to its two handles (one on the long side and one above), the suitcase is also great with the baggage drop-off and on arrival on the roller ligament. As a particularly smart feature, I remember the locking mechanism: The zipper from the zipper on the outside of the suitcase are clicked on next to the TSA lock-only then is the suitcase securely closed.

The “19 degree” was subjected to a decent practical test. In Mexico he had to roll over asphalt and on luggage transporters and once over the bumpy cobblestones of a beautiful hacienda. My lilac -colored friend has proven to me loyal service, nothing lost, never slugged, but will surely bring my stuff over the Atlantic and back from start to finish.

No flight, but a car ride to the beautiful Eifel in Rhineland-Palatinate my friend and I had on the long weekend-thanks to bridge day. Usually I wouldn't need a suitcase in the size of a suit for such a short trip, but since we were traveling by car, I was able to pack up as much as I wanted. The suitcase from Eastpak came as if it was called because it was actually exactly the perfect size to accommodate all my things in it. The first impression while packing at home was great because when I opened the case I fell into my hands directly - and I appreciate and love small details like this very much. I also liked the secure design with a number lock and the practical division with zipper compartments in the interior. An additional gadget for everyone who likes it: you can register the suitcase with the digital luggage trailer online. This almost replaces a case day that you would have to buy separately. Registration works quickly and easily. A big plus for me!

For me it went from Munich with the tram and the train to Augsburg, from where we continued by car. Three means of transport, which the suitcase all mastered extremely well. Immediately when I ran to the tram and especially during the somewhat further path at the train station to the track, I noticed how smoothly the roles slid over the asphalt or stone floor. For me, this is also one of the most important features when it comes to suitcases. I want me to just pull him behind me - no matter where I am. Admittedly, I also tend to be a last-minute type, which is why it is particularly important to me that the suitcase can also keep up if I have to put a small sprint.

A great suitcase that you will certainly benefit from for years. And if not, the (almost unbeatable) guarantee of 30 years. I would definitely recommend the Eastpak model because it is timeless, practical and smart. Seems like they areCool Kidsthat used to wear Eastpak backpacks, today the Eastpak case carrier wearers. Anyway, I'm a fan!

Useful gadgets for travel cases

  • Transport cover:You get extra protection for your suitcase with a cover. Some manufacturers: Inside, suitable protective sleeves have on offer, but also at the airport there is the possibility to wrap the suitcase with foil (like to think of the environment here and, if desired, place it more useful on a multiple usable transport cover).
  • Case band:You always pack your suitcase too full? A suitcase band gives extra support, but can also serve as a recognition feature.
  • Tracking device:With, such as an Apple day, you have an eye on your suitcase at any time. This is an advantage, especially for long -distance flights. Because the case can be found faster if you lose.
  • TSA-Schloss:Especially on long flights, it makes sense to protect the contents of the case with a lock. Many models have a built -in number lock, but of course they can also be purchased extra. The TSA locks are supposed to prevent occasional crime and are a system specially developed for air traffic, which can be opened by the security guards during controls-if there is a suspicion of illegal goods.
  • Name sign:Many airlines offer signs for labeling for their guests, but here too you can order your own “day” of the choice. Many brands and suitcases: inside offer such gadgets that can be selected individually according to taste.

What does the task baggage depend on?

Especially with travel destinations that are related to a flight, additional regulations are added, which must be observed when buying and packing. In addition to the hand luggage, where you can rely on a carry-on case or travel bags, check-in luggage must be based on the regulations of the airlines. So that you are on the top stand, all information summarized here. Interesting? Just click and read more.

What are approved dimensions?

The term “task baggage” refers to everything you have to hand over at the switch and cannot lead to you. Therefore, one often speaks of a check-in case. As a rule of thumb you can say: Take baggage on short lines usually costs an additional charge, a check-in case is included on long-haul flights (free baggage) depending on the tariff class, and the more “expensive” the ticket class, the more difficult the case can be. Rain luggage such as surf boards or larger pieces such as strollers usually also cost. So find out in advance about the specific provisions of the airline.

Common dimensions for check-in cases:20–32 kilograms to 158 cm (combination of height, width and depth).

What is the ideal weight for a travel case?

In principle, the following applies: the easier the suitcase, the more you can pack. This is particularly important with regard to a flight. Because here often every gram counts. While the dimensions vary and not quite as meticulously checked, the weight must always be taken precisely. If you grab too much, i.e. you have too heavy suitcases, you have to count on prices or reverse at the airport. Therefore, you should definitely think about this point when making a purchase decision.

What is not allowed in the suitcase while flying?

Good news in advance: There is no limitation for liquids when it comes to tasks-all beauty fans can breathe a sigh of relief here. Basically, it is smart, especially with long vacations, oneTo do nothing to forget or insert too much of the “wrong” things or anyto avoid in advance. An absolute disaster for outfit planning in any case! So isThe top priority. Detailed information on forbidden objects can be found at the airport, on the Airlines websites or on the website ofFederal police.

  • Casting fabrics, gases, flammable liquids, petrol -powered devices
  • E-cigarettes + lighters (allowed in hand luggage or “on the body”))
  • Extra battery (allowed in hand luggage)
  • Strong magnetic materials
  • Lace or sharp objects, tools

Which travel suitcase sizes are there in general?

Depending on how your travel behavior is, you should consider investing in a suitcase set. Most of the time there are all common sizes (, medium task baggage and large check-in case) in one-often also at a cheaper price. Another advantage here is that if you value uniformity, you get everything in a design. Especially for frequent flyers: inside and travel fashionistas a plus point. Otherwise, consider what sizes you have used in the past, especially or less often. For unique trips, of course, you can also borrow a suitable model from the friend or family. In most brands, the dimensionsM, L und XLspoken. However, the most common are the subdivisions in three formats, which, depending on the travel time and number of people, help to choose the right model.

  • Task baggage m:50–70 Liter
  • Task baggage L:70–120 Liter
  • Task baggage XL:From 120 liters

So the travel case remains usable for a long time

In order to enjoy your travel suitcase for a long time, you should consider a few things after use and when storing it. Many manufacturers: Inside, there are also tips on the website, but we have summarized a few general ones.

  1. Clean the suitcase (outside):If necessary, wipe off with a damp cloth and mild soap. Only after completely drying (particularly important for fabrics/zipes) for storing in the basement or in the attic.
  2. Clean the suitcase (inside):After the trip, the suitcase can be (carefully) sucked out and then cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap. The same applies to drying. In addition, you can be open and ventilated for a night. Of course only in a place where it cannot be stolen. If there are removable elements, find out in advance whether they can be washed.
  3. Damage or defects? If you determine damage to your suitcase after the trip, then first inform you whether it could be a guarantee. Certain signs of wear such as scratches or spots are normal, but if the zipper no longer goes after a few times, you should get professional help - in the store or from an expert: inside (shoemaker: inside etc.).
