Experts reveal: Many of us apply cream completely wrong - and how we should do it instead

Apply cream correctly: You should avoid this mistake

You would think that applying lotion would be a pretty simple matter. Cream on it and it's good. But most know it's a little more complicated than that. Important factors for getting it rightFor example, are the right products for our own skin, how often we apply cream and when. But there is another important factor that, according to experts, is crucial for whether our skin absorbs the product well. And admittedly, even the professionals in our editorial team were a little surprised.

This mistake when applying cream leads to dry skin

When exactly you apply cream is almost as important as which product you choose, explains Daniel Isaacs, chief product officer, skin care formulator and head of research at skin care brand Medik8. What is important is how we prepare our skin for the product. Anyone (like most of us) showers, dries off, then gets dressed comfortably and then theirUnfortunately, according to the expert, you are already doing it wrong.

The point that many people don't know is that skin care should ideally not be applied to dry skin, but to slightly moist skin. "It's a common myth that air drying your skin is the best way to ensure it's free of irritation and able to 'breathe,'" says the skin care expert. Air drying is also becoming increasingly popularastheBeauty hack, which leads to additional confusion in the skin care cosmos.

Apply cream correctly: this is how to do it correctly

Yes, air drying is generally better than using a towel, Isaacs continues. After all, it is now known that with towels, especially those that you don't change every day, you can rub bacteria into your skin and eyes, which irritates the skin and mucous membranes. But: You shouldn't dry your skin before applying creamcompletelet dry.

Why, explains Rhysa Phommachanh, skin care specialist at Landys Chemist: “The evaporation process contributes to transepidermal water loss (or TEWL), where water escapes from the skin into the air, accelerating the overall drying of the skin and causing the skin to dry out more quickly tight and feels rough. It also makes it more prone to fine lines and wrinkles.”

Instead, Isaacs recommends “applying moisturizer to damp skin to better lock in moisture. When skin is slightly damp, it is better able to absorb moisturizing ingredients, increasing the effectiveness of the product. This allows the moisturizer to form a barrier that locks in moisture, resulting in a plumper, more radiant complexion”.
