Child benefit 2025: This is what parents will get from next year

For many parents, child benefit is an important financial support in everyday life, but it is often not enough to cover the increasing costs of living. This is why there is discussion every year about increasing child benefit. With the current federal budget plan for 2025 it is clear that child benefit will be increased on January 1, 2025.

In addition, the long-planned basic child benefit will be introduced in 2025, which will bundle other child benefit benefits such as the child allowance and thus make it easier to access for parents who are entitled.

This is how high the child benefit will be from 2025

Families in Germany currently receive child benefit as long as their annual income does not exceed 300,000 euros. This state benefit is intended to help cover children's basic needs and make everyday family life easier.

The current amount of child benefit is 250 euros per child per month, an amount that has often been perceived as inadequate in recent years. Given rising prices for food, rent and education costs, pressure is growing on politicians to increase support for families.

With the federal budget for 2025 that has now been approved, it is clear that child benefit will be increased by 5 euros per month per child from 2025. This means that families will receive 255 euros per month per child from the family fund from next year.

Further increase decided for 2026

A further increase has already been decided for 2026. The child benefit should then be increased again by 4 euros. This means that parents will receive 259 euros per child per month from 2026.

Basic child security will come in 2025

The basic child protection, which was decided in September 2023, should finally take effect from 2025 and bundle state financial benefits for families and make it easier to submit applications. So far, families can and must, child allowance and child allowance must be submitted separately and to sometimes different authorities. As a result, even families who are entitled to social benefits do not take advantage of them, for the simple reason that they do not know that they are entitled.

The current draft from the Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth stipulates that the basic child benefit consists of two parts: the child guarantee amount (corresponds to the current child benefit) and the additional child benefit (corresponds to other social benefits). In the future, the child guarantee amount should no longer be counted towards the citizen's benefit, unlike the current child benefit.

The additional child allowances should be staggered according to the age of a child and are calculated depending on the parents' income. Above a certain limit, families will no longer be eligible for additional contributions. It is not yet known exactly where these limits will be.

Basic child protection via online application

Just like current child benefit, basic child benefit must also be applied for once. This application shouldaccording to current planscan also be done via a purely online application. This should be available in a timely manner on a new online portal.
