According to the law: Can you wash the car on Sundays?
Sunday is the day off, of course. But can I not wash my car that day?
Your car is dirty and could urgently tolerate a polish? Which day is better suited than Sunday: you usually have nothing planned and therefore a lot of time for the car.
But can you wash the car on Sundays? After all, it is already in the Basic Law (Art.140) that Sunday is legally protected. We clarify whether you can clean the car on Sundays and what you have to pay attention to.
This is what the law for car washing on Sunday says
In general: what is allowed on Sunday and holidays is regulated by law - in the so -called holiday law. TheLaw of NRWsays: "On Sundays and public holidays, all publicly noticeable work is prohibited that are suitable for disturbing the external calm of the day".
This does not have to be cleaned by cleaning the car. In fact, this is regulated differently from state to state.
Here you shouldn't wash the car on Sundays
In the federal statesBaden-Württemberg, Bremen, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and in SaarlandIf the Sunday washing of cars is not permitted. That means:
- Washing systems remain closed.
- The SB wash boxes at petrol stations also remain.
- You shouldn't clean your car at home or in the garden (more on that later).
However, the latter has less to do with Sunday rest than with environmental protection. Because in many places it must be ensured that you do not contaminate the groundwater with your wiping water. Sensitive fines can wave.

Wash the car on Sundays: Here it is allowed
On the other hand, Sunday auto cleaning is allowed in Bavaria, Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia. Here the washing systems remain open on Sundays. But here too there are specific rules depending on the federal state.

Special regulations in the federal states
Washing the car on Sundays is allowed in some federal states. However, there are certain exceptions and regulations. These regulations apply in the individual federal states:
Bayern
Here the washing license is left to the municipalities. These have to be loudPublic holidayHowever, keep in mind that the operation of a car wash must not take place before 12 noon and is not washed on the following statutory holidays: New Year, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, Pentecost Sunday, Whit Monday, May 1st, 1st and 2nd Christmas Day.
Berlin
The car was actually not allowed in Berlin, under the "Needs trade regulation“But it is still permitted to employ people on Sundays and public holidays in washing systems. Exception: Christmas holidays, New Year, Good Friday, 1st and 2nd Easter holiday, May 1st and Pentecost.
Brandenburg
Washing is allowed in Brandenburg if the holiday rest is not disturbed. LoudLawThere is also a ban on the first Christmas holiday, Easter Sunday, Pentecost Sunday, Reformation Festival, Memorial Day and on Sunday. The systems must also stand still during service.
Hamburg
In Hamburg you can wash your car on Sundays in commercial or industrial areas between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Except of this are loudHoliday regulationstatutory holidays that fall on Sundays, as well as Easter Sunday, Pentecost Sunday, Memorial Day and Dead Sunday.
Hesse
Here, too, responsibility lies with the municipalities. However, only fully automatic, closed washing systems that belong to petrol stations may be approved.
There are also loudPublic holidayTime window. Between May 1 and August 31, the washing systems can open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., otherwise only until 8 p.m. In addition, on the holidays of Good Friday, Memorial Day and Dead Sunday, the car must not be washed in Hesse.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
The cleaning is loudLawOn Easter Sunday, Pentecost Sunday, Memorial Day and Dead Sunday.
Saxony-Anhalt
Basically, the laundry is allowed on Sundays. Except are loudPublic holidayOnly Easter Sunday, Pentecost Sunday, Memorial Day, Dead Sunday and Sunday, which are also a state -recognized holidays.
Saxony
In this state, afterLawFully automatic washing systems at petrol stations are operated on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Self -wash systems at petrol stations are permitted between 12 and 8 p.m. If the automatic or self -washing system is in a commercial area, you can use it between 12 and 8 p.m.
Schleswig-Holstein
"Automatic washing systems and self -wash systems for motor vehicles" are fromPublic holidayexcept for the state. So there are no restrictions.
Thuringia
In Thuringia, permission is then granted if it can be ensured that the "disturbance of the holiday rest of the population" can be excluded, as in thePublic holidayof the country. The permission provides counties, independent cities or the municipalities.
Up to 100,000 euros possible
No matter what day of the week: You shouldn't do one thing. Wash your car in front of the garage or in the garden. The reason: The car wash can get harmful chemicals into the waste water. If you wash the car at home, you can cause a "negligent or intentional pollution of the groundwater with toxic or water -hazardous fabrics".
Depending on the region, this can be very expensive very quickly. In the worst case, punishments of up to 100,000 euros are at risk. So better: let it spread on Sunday and then off to the next car wash!
