Sugar and carbonated drinks as risk factors for mortality
To date, there have been few observational studies examining the connection between sugary drinks and cancer mortality. This study is one of the few that deals with such predictions regarding the consumption of such soft drinks. Researchers examined the relationship between sugary soda and all-cause and breast cancer mortality in 927 women ages 35 to 79. Of the more than 900 women with breast cancer, 41% had died at the end of follow-up. Among those who died, there was a higher percentage of participants who reported regular consumption of such drinks than women who were still alive. The associations did not change when the researchers included dietary consumption as a variable.
Carbonated drinks contribute the most sugar and extra calories to the diet. However, they do not bring anything else with them that is nutritionally related.
