Floor-level shower in the bathroom – open designs & wet rooms

The walk-in shower is without a doubt one of the most popular bathroom trends. And that's no wonder. In this type of shower you have a lot more space and therefore comfort and it is easier to walk through. And not only that. The whole bathroom looks much more spacious with such a design. If you are also thinking about a floor-level shower, then we would like to use our gallery to offer you some inspiration that you can consider when designing your bathroom.

The floor is on the same level as the rest of the bathroom. There are no elevations, barriers or shower trays. Of course, barrier-free showers also have their advantages and disadvantages. While shower trays are much easier to clean, the floor in the walk-in shower needs to be cleaned a little more thoroughly. Since it has to be tiled, it has many joints in which dirt and bacteria particularly like to settle. This can be very unpleasant, especially with mosaic tiles for the floor-level shower.

To avoid this, you can of course also use aso-called floor elementHave it installed that has a smooth surface like the shower tray. This element is simply embedded in the ground and includes both a gutter and the desired slope, which can be chosen in any direction.

Even if it gets dirty more quickly and therefore has to be thoroughly cleaned more often, the advantage is that you at least have a lot of space again. You can easily enter the shower and move freely while cleaning, you don't feel restricted and you don't constantly bump into the faucet, the shower partition or the walls.

Especially in small bathrooms, a floor-level shower ensures that the room looks larger. That's why it's the better alternative for a small shower and an extra tub. Wall niches can be used very well or you can use the rearmost area of the room. Depending on your space, you can choose a sliding or push-and-pull glass door.

If you would like to tile your floor-level shower, we recommend tiles that are as large as possible. The smaller these are, the more joints the wet room will have, as we have already mentioned. And sooner or later these joints need to be thoroughly scrubbed. If it is a little smaller, large tiles are not particularly suitable because they have to be cut, which can be visually unsightly.

It's best to have your tiler measure the shower area and decide which size tile is best. He can best estimate which size requires the least cutting. We also recommend this as an alternativeso-called quartz plates, which are offered in different sizes. Choose the size accordingly.

The process can be chosen in different variants. It can be both hidden and visible in the form of a bar. Either way, it will look more elegant this way than with the classic shower tray drain, because it's something different. We will quickly introduce you to some variants.

A wall drain is practical because, as the name suggests, it is located in the wall. This way the floor remains flat and uninterrupted. This type of drain has an opening that absorbs water quickly and reliably. The designs are varied depending on the manufacturer.

The shower channel is very popular. However, it is a lot more expensive than the usual shower drains. The channel as a linear drainage for the floor-level shower is a long bar that is installed on one of the sides of the shower. The tiles are then tilted in this direction. When choosing, it is best to make sure that there is a dirt trap and that the gutter is easy to clean.

The round drain is installed in the middle and can absorb water from all sides. This option is the cheapest of all. If you think that this variant is boring, then you are wrong. There are also interesting designs for the round drain that can decorate the floor of the walk-in shower just as nicely.

You are spoiled for choice: Do you want an open shower design, a semi-open one or would you prefer a wet room? This largely depends on the size of the bathroom and how much you want to invest in the floor-level shower. The closed version above is also very pretty, with the shower partition made of curved glass.

If you choose an open variant, a rain shower head is definitely recommended. In normal showers, the water falls at an angle, so you could moisten the bathroom outside of the shower while showering. The rain shower head allows the water to run vertically downwards and splashes are reduced.

Only one shower partition was chosen for this design. The partition is made of glass and is located parallel to the wall. The third side has a window, while the fourth side is designed to be open and allows entry. The wall tiles in brown color are also very attractive. A quartz slab serves as the floor covering.

The glass partition is undoubtedly incredibly attractive. However, it must be borne in mind that limescale quickly accumulates there due to the water drops. So you either have to wipe the glass wall dry after each use of the shower to avoid drip stains or descale the glass partition frequently. An alternative are frosted glass partitions.

Large wet cells are also very spacious. Depending on the size, you can also place a bathtub there and concentrate the moisture in a smaller area in the bathroom. The design above uses a wide shower drain that is the same color as the tiles. The shower is visually separated from the rest of the bathroom by a contrasting color.

The bathroom becomes particularly chic if you use a different tile color for the wet room. In this way you provide texture and a visual division of the areas in the bathroom. The attractive, floor-level shower is shown to its best advantage and makes your bathroom look even more stylish. In the example above, turquoise tiles were combined with white marble.

No glass was used as a shower enclosure for this open version. Instead, a partition was installed, leaving one of the four sides open. The elongated shape of the shower and placing the shower head at the rear prevents splashes from coming out of the shower. A long shower channel serves as a drain.

The flat floor and the lack of a shower tray that provides insulation makes the walk-in shower perfect for heating from below. Underfloor heating increases comfort and ensures a pleasant feeling under your feet even in winter. So if you install underfloor heating in the bathroom, let it run under the shower too.

Wood also ensures a pleasant feeling under your feet. In the form of a grid, you can use it to decorate the floor. If the wood becomes unattractive and breaks, the grille is simply replaced. The water can then flow through the grid directly into the drain. Since there is no flat surface, the water is not splashed back as much. There are fewer drops on glass and walls.
