Sink height in the bathroom – the optimal height depends on these factors!

In the bathroom –just like in the kitchen– Ergonomics is particularly important. Individual sanitary facilities must be at the correct height to ensure comfortable and safe conditions for daily hygiene. Particular attention should be paid to the sink, which we use several times a day. At what height should the sink be installed? What is the recommended mounting height for countertop sinks? Is there a standard size for assembly? You will find out about this in the following sections.

Washbasin height according to DIN

The standard height of washbasins is based on DIN standard 68935, which stipulates a height of 85 to 95 centimeters. This always involves measuring from the finished floor to the top edge of the sink. This DIN standard is convenient for most people and is often used as a guideline for washbasins in public spaces and rental apartments.

Adjust the sink height to your body size

When arranging a private bathroom or a guest toilet, not only general recommendations but also the height of the people in the household should be taken into account. It's best to install the sink at a height where adults can wash their hands in an upright position - without having to lean over the sink. At the same time, the sink should not be too high. Otherwise, washing your hands or face will become uncomfortable.

When choosing the right sink height for your height, consider the following guidelines:

Body sizeRecommended mounting height for the washbasin
160 cm80 cm
175 cm85 cm
180 cm90 cm
190 cm95 cm

If all members of the household are the same height, the choice would be easy. But what if there are very large and very small people living under the same roof who have very different needs? As a compromise, the sink should then be hung at a standard height of 85 to 90 cm so that every adult family member can use it without any problems. For children, climbing aids for normal sink heights are the best solution.

Ideal height for countertop washbasins

The above parameters apply to all types of sinks. The hanging, undercounter and built-in washbasins are easy to install. The situation with countertop washbasins may be a little more complicated. Finally haveSinks that are mounted on a countertop, extremely different heights. If it is an extra-deep countertop washbasin, there is a risk that the worktop will be placed too deep under the washbasin with a standard installation height.

And how do you determine the ideal height? If the height of your washbasin is 85 cm (measured from the floor to the top edge), subtract the height of the countertop washbasin and the thickness of the washbasin top. The result is the distance of the bottom edge of the plate from the floor. If you are planning a vanity top with a base cabinet or drawers, you should mount the countertop washbasin a few centimeters higher.

Water connection and drainage

At what height should I place the sink drain? The height of the sink requires a specific arrangement of the hot and cold water connections and the drain opening. Assuming that the sink is installed at a standard height of 85 to 90 cm, the drain should be approximately 55 cm above the floor. Water connections with valves should be placed slightly higher - at a height of approx. 55 - 65 cm. This arrangement of elements allows the faucet hoses to be freely connected to the valves and the sink drain to be connected to the sewer hole using the siphon.

The optimal sink height for children

Due to the dizzying pace at which children grow, it is definitely pointless to have oneBathroom for the little onesto design. Instead of mounting the sink just above the floor, it is better to place it at a standard height and purchase a special non-slip step stool or learning tower, which will make it easier for young children to take care of their own hygiene.

The situation is completely different for crèches, kindergartens and primary schools. In schools and public institutions, every educational institution must ensure that students have access to appropriate hygienic and sanitary conditions. However, the guidelines do not specify at what height sanitary facilities should be installed for each age group. In the case of washbasins, the following standards are applied:

AlterBody sizeRecommended installation height of wash basins
up to 3 years<90 cm50 cm
3-6 years90-120 cm55-65 cm
7-11 years120-150 cm65-75 cm
12-15 years150-170 cm75-85 cm

Sink height for disabled people

The currently valid regulations forhandicapped accessible bathroomsare DIN 18024 Part 2 and DIN 18025. In the private sector, DIN 18025 must be taken into account. The document provides very general guidelines for the selection and arrangement of plumbing fixtures. Regarding sinks, it simply states that the unit must be adapted to the needs of people with disabilities.

The European standard DIN 18024-2 provides detailed guidelines for the height of a handicap-accessible washbasin. According to the recommendations, the top edge of the sink should be a maximum of 80 cm above the floor. At the same time, there must be sufficient knee and foot space below the sink - with a minimum depth of 30 cm and a height of 67 cm. In practice, this means that you should avoid bases and bathroom cabinets when designing the sink area.
