Carnival is coming up again and, like every year, the eternal question arises: What should I wear again? The children in particular are really looking forward to the carnival and can hardly wait to dress up as their favorite heroes or princesses. Your child wants to dress up as a wizard or witch, but you're just missing the right hat to complete the costume? Then you've come to the right place because I'll show you how to easily make a magician's hat.
No matter whether it's Carnival or Halloween - since we all know the story of Harry Potter, wizards and witches have been among the most popular costumes ever. And as soon as the magic hat is on your head, you can feel the magical power that comes from it. Sometimes it's the little details that have the biggest impact and a cool magician's hat gives our costume the finishing touch. And no – it doesn’t always have to be made of fabric. Make it out of paper or felt – find out how you can make your own magic hat.
Make a magic hat out of paper
First, I have an interesting fact for you. Did you know that magic hats have been around since the Bronze Age? The oldest hat is around 3,000 years old and is in the “Museum for Early History” in Berlin. And now we can get started! The following instructions are so simple that even those who don't like DIY can make a magic hat.
Materials needed
- black or colorful construction paper in a color of your choice, approximately 50x70 cm sheet
- Scissors
- Circle
- Pencil
- Glue or hot glue gun
- Colorful material or bows to decorate the magic hat
Step-by-step instructions
- Use the compass to draw an approximately 40 cm quarter circle in the lower right corner of the construction paper. A little tip: If you don't have a compass, you could also use a tape measure.
- Use scissors to cut out the cone carefully and as cleanly as possible.
- Roll up the construction paper into a large “bag” and form it into a large cone.
- Next, coat the entire seam of the cone with glue and press the ends firmly for a few minutes.
- Let everything dry completely and then make small incisions about every 3 cm at the open end with scissors.
- Carefully fold the tabs outwards and then inwards again.
- Place the cone on the remaining paper and draw an outline around it.
- Poke the tip of the compass in the middle of the outline and cleanly cut out the circle and the inner circle - this is the brim for your magician's hat.
- Now fold the flaps of the hat outwards again and attach them with hot glue or glue.
- Put the ring over the hat and press everything firmly for a few minutes.
- And now the big fun begins! You can decorate the magic hat in different ways as you wish. Whether with felt, glitter or like me with gift ribbon – absolutely anything is allowed. Or how about leaving the whole thing to your children so that they can develop their creativity.
- Done – you can make your own magic hat so quickly and easily!
Felt magic hat
Any self-respecting witch or wizard can make their own magic hat! In contrast to the ready-made hats from the carnival shop, the homemade hat can be made to fit precisely. So roll up your sleeves and find out how to make a magic hat out of felt.
Materials needed
- 30.5×30.5 cm felt sheets in black or another color of your choice
- 5 sheets of DIN A4 paper, white
- Leather strap
- Hot glue
- Scissors
- Hand punch for crafts
- Decorations of your choice
Step-by-step instructions
- Use scissors to cut out a 30 cm diameter circle from the felt sheet.
- Cut a hole for the head in the middle of the circle
- Next, cut a second sheet into a conical shape - this will be the tip for your magician's hat.
- Then use the hand punch to punch 11 shoelace holes into the straight sides of the cone.
- Thread the leather bath crosswise through the holes.
- Use the hot glue to glue the tip of the hat to the round base and press firmly for a few minutes.
- Finally, decorate the felt magic hat as you wish so that it matches your carnival costume.
Children love doing magic shows. But what does every magician need? A top hat, of course! To complete your carnival costume, I'll explain to you how to make a top hat!
Materials needed
- Colorful or black construction paper
- Lineal
- Scissors
- Glue
- Pencil
- Circle
Instructions
- First measure the head circumference with a tape measure and cut out a 50 x 20 cm long strip from the construction paper.
- Draw a 1.5 cm wide border on both long sides and draw a line every 1.5 cm on the edges.
- Use the tip of the scissors to score the edge lines and cut the short lines up to the edge line - this makes it easier to bend the paper.
- Fold the edge up on one side and down on the other side.
- Then cut off the last edge piece on both sides.
- Fold a cylinder out of the strip and measure the diameter.
- Draw a circle with a radius of half the diameter and draw a larger circle around it.
- Cut out the circles and put the outer circle over the cylinder and glue it together.
- Finally, stick the small circle on top and you're done - you can make a cylinder so quickly!
Making a Harry Potter Magic Hat: The Sorting Hat craft instructions
It doesn't matter how old you are - once a Potter fan, forever a Potter fan and I'm still waiting for my letter from Hogwarts. Is your child also a Potterhead? Cool! How about onePotter costumethis year? Or why make the magic hat that determines which house you go to? Here are my instructions for crafting the Sorting Hat!
Materials needed
- Tonkarton
- old newspaper
- Lineal
- Scissors
- Craft glue and brushes
- Pencil
- Circle
- Acrylic paint
- wire
- Thesa film
Step-by-step instructions
- Draw a square on the cardboard - you decide how big it is.
- Roll it up into a cone and then unfold the cone again.
- Using scotch tape, attach a piece of wire to the longest diagonal line and fold the cone back together.
- Stick the cone in place with scotch tape and cut the bottom edge so that you have a level. Bend the hat slightly at the top.
- Draw a ring on the cardboard, whereby the inner ring must be as large as the bottom surface of the cone.
- Draw another inner circle and cut everything out - the spikes go into this space.
- Fold the prongs upwards and use the tape to attach the ring to the cone.
- Coat the hat with craft glue and stick the newspaper on top. Let everything dry completely and in the meantime roll four “sausages” out of the remaining newspaper – these will be the lips and eyebrows.
- Now attach the lips and eyebrows with the scotch tape and cover everything again with newspaper and craft glue.
- Let everything dry and paint the talking hat.
- And that's it - it's so easy to make the sorting hat yourself.
