With a few plastic pumpkin buckets,Autumn flowers and large potsYou can create a great Halloween decoration for outside that is cheap and festive enough. The pumpkin buckets are easy to find, weatherproof and offer numerous customization options. Halloween is not only the spookiest time of the year, but also a good occasion to decorate the front yard or entrance with simple crafts.
– five orange pumpkin buckets (or ten if you want to build two towers)
– one or two large buckets, half a wine barrel or another suitable container as a basis for your Halloween decorations in the front yard
– a few bags with 50 liters of potting soil
– Metallstab, 120 – 140 cm
– Chrysanthemums in white, yellow and purple
– a hand drill and a ¾ drill bit (if you use a vessel without a drainage hole)
Step 1: Collect the materials for the Halloween decorations in the front yard
Start your fun fall planting project by purchasing five orange pumpkin buckets from a local retailer. Also, from a local garden center, pick up a few 50L bags of potting soil, a 4-foot-tall metal stake, and flowers in white, yellow, and purple that will complement the colors of the orange plastic pumpkins. For this project you will also need a ¾ drill bit to drill holes in the planter and plastic pumpkins.
Step 2: Drill a hole
Find a spot in the front yard or front door where you want to set up your flower towers. A nice flat surface is best. Chrysanthemums like places that receive at least six hours of sunlight per day and well-drained soil.
If you have halfBarrel as a flower potIf you want to use it, you will need to drill a hole in the ground with a drill. A hole in the center (about 2cm in diameter) should provide adequate drainage.
Step 3: Insert metal rod
To ensure that the stake in the center of the planter holds up even in windy weather, you should insert it about 10 cm into the ground. Place the barrel in the center of this hole. Fill the wooden barrel ¾ full with potting soil.
Step 4: Plant the first chrysanthemum
Plant one of the white chrysanthemums in the wooden barrel. It's a beautiful highlight and will create a contrast to the darker chrysanthemums you'll be planting in the pumpkin pots.
Step 5: Remove the plastic bucket handles
Remove the black plastic handles from the buckets. You can put these in the plastic waste. Drill a hole in the center of the bottom of the plastic pumpkin and one in the top right side.
Step 6: Place the first pumpkin on the stick
Carefully place the plastic pumpkin onto the metal rod so that it passes through the holes in the center and side.
Step 7: Shovel soil into the pumpkin
Fill plastic pumpkin ¾ full with potting soil. You can either use plastic cups or, of course, a small garden shovel.
Step 8: Prune plants if necessary
You may find that the chrysanthemum root ball does not fit into the plastic pumpkins. In this case, you can “gently” reduce it with a knife and then plant it in the pumpkin bucket.
Step 9: Assemble the tower
Prepare the next bucket by drilling a hole in the bottom this time and one in the left side at the top. Carefully place the second pumpkin onto the metal rod so that it rests on top of the first pumpkin. Put some soil back in the bucket and plant the plant.
Repeat these steps, alternating holes in the pumpkins on the left or right side at the top and alternating flower colors, until you have planted all five pumpkins. When you're finished planting, fill in any gaps with soil.
Step 10: Water the chrysanthemums and the Halloween decoration in the front yard is ready!
Water your newly planted container garden well to promote root development. After that at least once a week. If the leaves start to droop, it means they are not getting enough water.
Change the Halloween decorations as you wish
Chrysanthemums bloom well into autumn and are therefore ideal for this Halloween decoration. But there are also many other beautiful, seasonal flowers you can use. Pansies, for example, can even withstand sub-zero temperatures.
After Halloween, you can simply turn the towers with the pumpkin face towards the house and enjoy this beautiful decoration throughout November.
If you don't like gardening or getting your hands dirty, you can also implement this idea with artificial flowers. These also require no watering or care!
Your Halloween pumpkin tower is sure to delight visitors and passersby!
