Make large Christmas baubles for the garden yourself: This decoration is so incredibly cheap!

One of the easiest ways to make a statement with your Christmas decorations this year is to think big. As soon as December comes, it's time for the most beautifulhomemade wreaths, fairy lights and festive garlands. That's part of what makes Christmas so fun. This also allows you to express your own style. But when you start planning your Christmas decorations, don't forget your front yard and patio (especially if space isn't an issue for you). Today we'll reveal how you can make large Christmas balls for the garden yourself.

When it comes to Christmas decorations, we believe there is no such thing as “less is more”. And that's exactly why we first noticed these large outdoor Christmas tree baubles. First of all, they're huge - like giant versions of the handmade ornaments you use to decorate your Christmas tree. They are certainly a statement that is outsized and in some cases downright over the top. Additionally, eye-catching, oversized outdoor ornaments simply bring a cheerfulness that standard outdoor Christmas decorations cannot match.

Make your own large Christmas balls for the garden

XXL Christmas balls are super easy to make from beach or exercise balls. These are available in a diameter of 30 to 100 cm, so you can vary the sizes. The best thing is that they only cost a few euros and look incredibly good!

This is what you need for crafting:

  • inflatable beach ball with a diameter of about 100 cm
  • Spray paint for plastic in red and silver
  • Stamp with a matching motif
  • Acrylic paint in white
  • Stencil brush, round
  • Stencil brush, flat, 2.5 cm
  • Plastic pot
  • Cordless drill with 4 mm drill attachment
  • 3 mm thick metal wire
  • Never
  • Silicone adhesive
  • Clear varnish in spray can

1. Cover the entire ball with spray paint of any color. Use special paint for plastic so you can be sure it will last. Red Christmas balls are best visible from a distance, but you can of course also use another color such as gold, green or dark blue. Allow the paint to dry for 3-4 hours.

2. Now you can decorate the ball with stamps. To do this, use a round stencil brush to apply a thin layer of white acrylic paint to the stamp and press it onto the ball. The stamped pattern doesn't have to be perfect because you won't be able to look at the Christmas ball up close.

3. To separate the patterns and make them stand out better, also paint lines vertically around the ball. To ensure that these are at regular intervals, you can follow the lines already on the beach ball.

4. Now you have to make the hanger for your large Christmas ball. You can use a flower pot or other lightweight plastic container for this. Spray the pot with silver or gold spray paint and allow to dry thoroughly.

5. After the drying time, drill holes through both sides of the flower pot. Thread one end of the wire through each hole and bend over with pliers. This way the wire handle is fixed and cannot fall out.

6. To attach the flower pot to the ball, use clear silicone glue and ideally let it dry overnight. At the end, spray the finished Christmas ball with clear varnish to protect the color from weather influences such as snow and rain.

And here is another variation on how you can decorate the inflatable ball for Christmas! A slightly smaller, 30 cm exercise ball was used for these instructions. And instead of stamps, it was decorated with snowflake stickers and rhinestones.

It is important to use E600 glue or silicone glue to attach plastic decorations to the ball to prevent them from cracking or breaking in cold weather. A cool idea would also be to use the hook from a wire clothes hanger to hang the ball. Simply cut it off with wire cutters.

The exercise balls can also be wonderfully decorated with paint and adhesive tape. To depict the Santa Claus belt buckle, you only need tape, black acrylic paint and a square of gold painted wooden spatulas.

Place the exercise ball on a surface that stabilizes and elevates it. Placing the ball on a plastic bucket, empty coffee cup, or roll of tape will keep it from rolling and will make it easier to paint.

To make the black stripe, apply the tape around the entire circumference of the ball. Apply the paint with a stencil brush and let it dry briefly. Remove the tape before the paint is completely dry. Once dry, you can attach the belt buckle using wooden spatulas.

XXL Christmas ball for the front garden

XXl Christmas decorations go wonderfully with any type of Christmas decoration. If you don't want to hang the Christmas balls but arrange them on the ground, you should fill them with sand so that they stand stable and are not blown away by the wind.

The holidays are a great time to get crafty, spend time with friends and family, and make memories. However, if you don't want to make the Christmas balls every year, you can deflate them and store them folded. In this case, you should only decorate the balls with stickers and ribbons and not paint them with spray paint. Otherwise, cracks may appear in the dried paint.
