St. Nicholas Day is a holiday in Germany that is very important for Christian families. December 5th is St. Nicholas Eve and the children put boots outside the door to be filled or hang stockings on the fireplace. The next day, boots full of goodies await you! Below we'll tell you how you can make cool Santa boots - for your children, family or friends.
Make simple Santa boots: sew DIY boots out of felt
When it comes to Santa boots, it's time to ditch the old and introduce the new. Instead of using heavy boots that are even more expensive, opt for these homemade felt creations that are inspired by nature.
What you need:
- Felt: 70 cm each of white, red and various shades of green
- Scissors
- Matching threads
- sewing machine
- Craft glue
How to sew Santa Claus boots: instructions and template
- Enlarge and cut out the stencil: You can enlarge the stencil manually. You will then need a colored pencil, a ruler and graph paper. In each square, draw the same lines as in the corresponding square on the template. Another, easier way to enlarge is to use a photocopier.
- For each boot, cut 2 felt boot pieces for the front and back: Cut a 36 x 18 cm piece from felt in a contrasting color for the cuff. For the small decorations you should cut out 3 pieces of felt in the chosen color. For the hanging loops, cut a 2.5 x 20 cm strip in the chosen color.
- Pin the Santa boot along the curved edges from front to back (right sides together). Insert the loop into the top, back corner of the DIY boot, the raw edges meeting. Sew around the boot, leaving only the top edge open. Cut the curves and turn the fabric inside out.
- Pin and sew the short ends of the cuffs together to form a tube. Fold the tube in half and hand-tack it to the top edge of the cuff.
- Place the cuff into the top edge of the Santa boot and place the cuff seam on the back seam of the DIY boot - pin and sew. Then fold the cuff outwards around the top edge of the boot. Fray the edge with scissors.
- Glue on the decorations.

Creative craft ideas for St. Nicholas Day: Make St. Nicholas boots out of plastic
We always have a recycling bin full of plastic bottles. We should then use these for a fun decoration for St. Nicholas Day! The little boot is just too cute for words. We think it's great that you can do this project together as a family or with your children. It's a little more complicated than...other Christmas decorations, but that's nothing compared to the smile your kids will have when the boot is finished and proudly displayed.

- Empty plastic bottle
- cardboard
- Plaster
- Water

- Red spray paint

DIY boots: instructions
- Remove the label from an empty bottle and cut off the top and bottom portions of the bottle. Discard the top portion with the lid.
- Glue the base to a piece of cardboard with the base facing up and the pipe part next to it so that there is little or no space between the two parts.
- Cut off the excess cardboard around the edge of the plastic bottle pieces.
- In a large bowl, mix a small amount of plaster according to package directions. You need about 1 cup.
- Using a wooden stick, spread the prepared plaster over the bottle pieces to create a structure, covering the bottom piece and the high piece on all sides but not the top. Set the boot aside and let it dry.
- Once the plaster has dried, spray all sides with red spray paint and set aside to dry.
- Once the paint has dried, you can use glue to attach a piece of glitter tape around the bottom of the boot.
- Use cotton balls or cotton wool and tape them around the upper part of the boot.
- Tie a small bow with clear ribbon and tie the middle with plain white ribbon.
- Add a small Christmas bow to the center of the clear bow and tie them together with white ribbon. Glue these to the front of the boot between the two parts.
- Add additional Christmas decorations around the boot as desired.
On December 5th, put Santa's boot on the doorstep. The next day you can use it to decorate your living room for Christmas - it is the perfect homemade oneChristmas decoration for your home.
