It's time to prepare for winter and get the firewood. Or maybe you've already done that and now you're standing in front of this pile of wood and don't really know how to organize and store it properly? Today we would like to explain to you how to stack firewood and even in a decorative way. There are a few things you should pay attention to so that everything is stable and the wood can dry through good ventilation.
Proper firewood storage
Whether on a house wall, on a privacy screen or free-standing in the garden - there are many ways you can stack firewood correctly. And it's not just the layering that plays an important role, but also the location and the subsoil. TheVentilation between the logsNot only does it help the wood dry, it also prevents it from weathering when it gets wet. The logs are only ready for burning after one to three years, because if it is too humid, it will not heat effectively (which would be a waste), but additional harmful gases and excessive soot will also be produced, which pollutes the fireplace. It is also important that the wood is protected from rain and snow. So, how do you go about it?
Where should you stack the firewood?
The fresh air is optimal so that the wood can dry properly. If the location is south-facing, all the better. However, all other cardinal points are also suitable, as long as they provide additional protection from wind and rain. Under no circumstances should you do this in the basementStore firewood. Not only is it usually humid there, but the air circulation is anything but optimal.
If you choose a house wall on which to stack the firewood, keep in mind that there should be a distance of five to ten centimeters from it so that the air can also get behind the stack of firewood. Regardless of whether it is on a wall or standing freely in the garden - a tarpaulin or small roof that protects against wind and weather should not be missing.
Pay attention to the surface
Remember that even the lowest layer of wood must be protected from moisture to prevent mold. Therefore the subsoil is of great importance. You can lay wooden boards or use a pallet for this purpose. This means that the wood does not rest on the damp ground, but is actually raised enough to be ventilated from below.
Stacking firewood – Now it’s time to stack it
So when you finally stack the firewood, what should you consider?
- Start with a scaffoldthat you build from the logs. Place them lengthways next to each other on the selected surface. The next layer should then run across the first.
- The right dimensionsprevent the stack from collapsing and guarantees abetter drying of firewood. You should keep in mind that you should prefer a wide pile to a tall one. The reason for this is that it is more stable than a narrow and tall one. Furthermore, the moisture is released downwards. So if the layers go up more, it will take longer for them to dry. Nevertheless, the stack of firewood should not exceed four meters and if it is quite long, the sides must be supported.
- A small distancebetween the individual logs also contributes to better ventilation. So when stacking the firewood, be sure to avoid placing the logs too close together.
Tipp: It's always best to bring logs into the house in advance. This supply then has a few hours to warm up and is easier to light and burn than the cold one.
Store firewood decoratively indoors and outdoors
Even though firewood has a specific purpose, that doesn't mean it can't be beautifully displayed and used for decoration. And this works equally indoors and outdoors. No matter if you are outsideShelf with an interesting shapeSet it up and stack the logs in it, create your own motifs with the wood or decorate a wall inside with a special firewood stack holder - the firewood will radiate a special atmosphere that will not only be pleasant in winter.
