Small lawn as a design element in the garden

A well-kept, lush green and weed-free lawn is the dream of many hobby gardeners. Instead of letting the lawn spread out, you can turn it into an attractive design element in your garden. This means you will benefit from both practical and aesthetic benefits. You can of course design a modern garden without a lawn, but the green lawn provides an atmospheric splash of color in the outdoor area and looks natural. Today we have collected a few ideas on how you can give a small lawn a modern design and really showcase it. Get inspired!

There are numerous ways to integrate a green carpet into the garden. Nowadays, more and more hobby gardeners are foregoing a spacious, indeterminate lawn that stretches from wall to wall. Large lawns need a lot of water and other resources to look beautiful and well-maintained. They also don't offer as much design freedom aesthetically as, for example, a small lawn with an interesting design. That's why small green spaces are becoming increasingly popular in garden design and are being used more and more frequently as a modern design element.

The key to a modern lawn is to design it as a specific visual element that works with other elements in the garden such as: B. Hardscape and plant beds interact and balance them out. In this way, the lawn gains importance and becomes not only beautiful but also practical.

As the following examples show, a geometric garden design looks extremely modern and can help divide outdoor space into different areas. A small lawn can serve as an area for playing or entertaining, or just add a peaceful, green splash of color to the garden that is pleasing to the eye. A modern lawn can be created from any number of grass species, including those native to a particular region and even requiring less maintenance. Below we will show you how a small lawn can have a really big impact outdoors.

Make it round

This round lawn with a lawn edge made of paving stones impresses with its perfect shape. It serves as an eye-catcher in the middle of the garden and can be viewed in peace from the small wooden bench. Planting along the lawn border successfully highlights the small lawn area.

When mowing such a lawn, you must always pay attention to the adjacent beds or plants. It's best to leave a narrow strip and cut it off later. In order to always keep the perfect shape of the lawn, you need an edger or grass trimmer.

The green lawn can also be transformed into an entertainment area, like in this example. There is a fire pit in the middle of the lawn, which creates a cozy atmosphere in the outdoor space.

If you have already chosen another corner of the garden for the fire pit, you can convert the small lawn into a great seating area instead. A few garden chairs, seat cushions and a small outdoor table are sufficient.

Even if you have a larger area for lawn in the garden, you should not necessarily cover it completely with grass. You can see a good alternative in the picture above. Here the designer opted for a few round lawns with mulch in between instead of creating a spacious lawn.

Another good option would be to create interesting patterns when mowing the lawn. You can design this as you wish if you set the lawn mower to different cutting heights for each area.

Small rectangular lawns

A rectangular lawn can be used to create a wonderful, natural accent outdoors. No matter whether you are interested in oneSquare design, or in another geometric shape, the effect of grass is always positive.

If you want the look of your lawn but don't have the time to care for it, you can use artificial turf as an alternative to real grass. It can hardly be distinguished visually from the real thing and minimizes the maintenance effort in the garden.

The combination of lawns and plant beds in geometric shapes creates a special work of art in the center of this modern garden. The small lawn is rectangular and, with its rich green color, is a real eye-catcher in the outdoor space.

Not everyone has enough space for a whole chessboard of lawn and stepping stones in the garden. However, its effect is very special. The well-known pattern gives the outdoor area structure and enchants with its perfect square shapes. For an even more interesting effect, the chessboard lawn can be supplemented with a chess piece as a garden decoration.

Small lawns can still be used asgreen joints between concrete slabscreate outdoors. You can see an example in the image above. Here, tread plates with small green areas in between serve as a pool deck and transform the garden with pool into a geometric highlight.

Even a very small lawn can make a big statement outdoors. When designing this modern house, the architects chose “paving stones” made of grass. These look like small raised beds made of Corten steel and form a green path to the house.

Combine lawn and gravel areas in the garden

If the small lawn area is combined with other design elements such as hardscape, gravel areas, plants, trees and decorations, a harmonious overall picture is created in the garden. A good example of this is the backyard pictured above, which impresses with its Asian flair.

A small green area can also be successfully staged in the front garden. In combination with light gravel and sandstone, the natural effect of the grass is particularly effective.

AGarden path made of stonesis considered a classic in garden design. But what do you think about a grass walkway? The grass is completely non-slip and therefore offers an interesting alternative to the classic stone slabs. In the example above, the squares are deceptive - the sidewalk runs through a bed of stones. And the result is really impressive.
