Fold your shirt correctly: With these three methods you will save space and always have wrinkle-free shirts

A shirt is a staple in your closet that you probably have many versions of - a crisp white shirt for events, a classic striped shirt for a day at the office, or a relaxed chambray version for the weekend. If you have limited space in your closet, there are folding methods that will help you save space while keeping shirts from getting wrinkled. Folding a shirt properly may seem a little intimidating and requires a little more care than folding a t-shirt, but if you follow this step-by-step guide, you'll have beautifully folded, easy-to-store shirts every time.

Method 1: Fold the shirt correctly in the shape of a rectangle

Step 1: Place it button side down.Take a shirt and place it buttoned side down on a flat surface. Make sure the shirt is fully buttoned (or at least button every other button). Then lay it down carefully so as not to pinch the collar and smooth out any kinks and wrinkles in the shirt.

Step 2: Fold the sleeves inwards.Take the right sleeve and fold it towards the middle of the shirt. Do the same with the left sleeve and fold both sleeves outwards. The two sleeves now form a V shape.

Step 3: Fold up the sleeves.Next, take the cuff of the right sleeve and pull it up to the top of the sleeve, folding the sleeve in the middle. Do the same with the left sleeve so that both are folded in half.

Step 4: Fold into thirds. Then, starting from the bottom, fold the shirt about a third of the way up and then fold it back over so that the top fold lines up with the shirt collar. Flip it over so the buttoned side is facing up, and you'll have a neatly folded, rectangular shirt that you can easily put in a drawer.

Method 2: Fold the shirt correctly by rolling it

How to Fold a Shirt Correctly – The rolling method works best for soft-textured garments that have a loose fit.

Step 1: Lay the shirt with the buttons facing up.First lay the unbuttoned shirt face up on a flat surface, such as a bed. B. a table or a bed and smooth it out.

Step 2: Fold into three parts.Take the right side and fold the shirt into three parts. Then take the sleeve and fold it down diagonally so that the right side of the shirt forms a straight line. Do the same with the left side - fold it into thirds and place the left sleeve diagonally down. You should now have a thin, rectangular shirt.

Step 3: Roll up tightly.Start with the collar and roll it up like a jam roll. Roll it up tightly and evenly to avoid creases, and continue rolling until you're a few inches from the bottom edge of the shirt.

Step 4: Insert the bottom part.Take the rolled shirt section and carefully tuck it into the bottom opening of the shirt to fully secure it. This way the shirt no longer rolls up and can be easily and neatly stored in a drawer.

Method 3: Fold shirts like in the store

This folding method is a good option for keeping shirts crisp and pristine.

Step 1: Lay the shirt buttons down. Take the shirt and place it on a flat surface, buttoned side down. Make sure it is buttoned so that the folds remain even.

Step 2: Fold the sleeves over. Start with the right sleeve and fold it over so that the cuff lines up with the bottom of the shirt. Then take the left sleeve and do the same. The sleeves will overlap, so smooth them out and make sure they line up neatly.

Step 3: Fold the bottom part of the shirt twice. Take the bottom part of the shirt and fold it up a few inches so you have a nice, neat fold. Then fold it over again so that the last fold lines up with the collar. This gives you a retail store-style folded garment that you can easily stack on shelves for wrinkle-free storage.

How to properly store already folded shirts using these methods

There are several ways to store folded shirts so that they don't get wrinkled and the folds are retained.

  1. Shirts that are folded into a rectangle using the first method can be stored upright in a drawer. Use drawer dividers or bins to create compartments in the drawer to keep shirts in place, to separate different types, and to make putting away folded laundry easier.
  2. Store rolled-up shirts the same way by placing them in compartments or organizing them in dividers.
  3. For shirts folded using the third method, stack them on a shelf. Keep the stacks short so that the shirts on the floor don't get crushed under the weight of too many shirts and stay nice and pristine.
