In today's article, we will use the example of a 35 square meter Moscow apartment to show you how a small living space can be furnished in a multifunctional and practical way. In 2015, the design team at Studio Bazi was commissioned to create a comfortable open living space with enough storage space and natural light. For this purpose, an individual furniture system was designed that makes optimal use of the available space. A wooden sleeping box is without a doubt the highlight of the interior design. Studio Bazi in Moscow is a multidisciplinary design studio that focuses on interior, product design and design research.
When renovating the small apartment, the interior designers demolished the partition wall between the kitchen and the living room to make the living area more open and bright. A lush curtain separates the entrance area from the rest of the main room. The living and dining area is particularly practical and adaptable. The furniture can be converted with just a few simple steps. A convertible sofa and an extendable dining table turn the small area into onecomfortable spacefor up to 10 guests. As requested by the client, sufficient storage space was provided in the 35 sqm apartment. There is a wardrobe next to the entrance door and three large pull-out cupboards are located under the sleeping box.
In order to keep the living space simple and clear, the interior has been chosen forSurfaces in white and wood tonesdecided. The walls and ceilings have been painted white. The material chosen for the floor covering was water-repellent laminate.
The wooden sleeping box is located on a second level, which can be reached via stairs. The open unit is equipped with its own lighting and offers a good view of the entire apartment. You can enjoy the good view both through the two windows and from the bed, which is positioned on a higher level. This makes the sleeping box a cozy and comfortable place to relax.
The wooden sleeping box is covered with stained pine wood panels. The wood creates a warm and friendly atmosphere in the interior and visually defines the different areas. The wooden boards on the outside were treated with brown wax. The design and construction of the sleeping box was the most difficult stage of this project. The unique wooden sleeping box is a completely separate piece of architecture within the one-room apartment.
One person can comfortably stand on the stairs leading to the sleeping area. The staircase leads into a narrow niche where there is a bookshelf.
There are handmade Iranian tiles on the walls in the kitchen, reminiscent of the residents' Iranian origins. In order to make the small bathroom more comfortable and visually larger, structured, square tiles were specifically chosen for the bathroom walls. The tiles are like little pictures that you can look at while bathing or showering.
Although finding rational solutions for small bathrooms is not an easy task, this Moscow apartment managed to accommodate a complete bathtub with associated fittings and plumbing. The bathroom also has a washing machine. It cannot be seen at first glance as it is hidden behind the simple fronts of the washbasin.
The small living unit has a small workstation located between the kitchenette and the window.
This small-format apartment is real proof that with a suitable division of functional areas and an individual furniture system, a multifunctional living space can be created in the smallest of spaces.
