In the first week of December, the Italian manufacturer of luxury sports cars officially presented the first Lamborghini SUV in the company's history. It's called “Urus” and will be available on the market in spring 2018. With 650 hp and a biturbo V8 under the hood, it has all the makings of being the fastest off-road vehicle in the world.
The first Lamborghini SUV in the company's history
The first off-road vehicle thatLamborghinionce produced is LM002. It was produced in small series between 1986 and 1993 and just 328 copies appeared on the market. After this not so successful project for a sports SUV, the Italians have invested a lot of resources in the new “Urus”. They have built a new factory with a paint shop in Sant'Agata Bolognese and hired new engineers who will only focus on the development of the new off-road vehicle. The first types of postage have been tested in cold, heat and rain for more than two years in Europe, Africa, the USA and the Middle East and have traveled a total of more than a million kilometers.
Its predecessor, LM002, serves as the basis and starting point for the new Lamborghini SUV. However, there are not that many similarities between the two models. Only perhaps the fact that the engine is not at the back, as usual, but at the front. In terms of design, the former crossover could shock 24 years ago, while the new SUV is intended to appeal to customers who want a family car and not a two-seater. The athletic ability is there. The luxury SUV impresses with a top speed of 305 km/h, making it the fastest off-road vehicle in the world. For comparison, a Bentley Bentayga reaches 301 km/h and a Porshe Cayenne Turbo reaches 286 km/h.
“Urus” offers space for five people and, despite its 2.2 tons, should feel sporty thanks to the 650 hp and the biturbo V8 engine. It is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a Torsen differential that distributes torque of up to 850 Nm between the two axles. The interior is dominated by noble materials such as aluminum, carbon, leather and Alcantara. The functional settings in the coupe such as seating positions, temperature, navigation system, telephone and etc. are accessible on two digital TFT displays - one for the driver and one for the functions that affect the passengers. Lamborghini reduces the buttons and dials on the cockpit to a minimum.
There is a driving dynamics switch on the driver's side at the bottom of the wide center console. There are the different modes: Strada (road), Sport, Corsa (racing) and Neve (snow), which are offered with the series models. There are also two off-road settings: Terra (earth) and Sabbia (sand), which the customer must order additionally. The base price for the Super Lamborghini SUV starts at 204,000 euros and is scheduled to be delivered to the first customers in spring 2018.
