The bed with storage space by Yesul Jang

In recent years, the demand for space-saving, compact furniture has continued to increase. Especially in big cities, where apartments are smaller, residents are constantly looking for space-saving alternatives for furnishings. ÉCAL graduate from Seoul Yesul Jang has designed a bed with storage space for millennials, specifically designed for the limited living space in urban apartments. The Tiny Home Bed is a tall single bed with storage space under the mattress that remains hidden behind a fabric curtain.

An all-rounder for every area: How the sofa contributes to coziness

A living room without a sofa is out of the question for most people. The upholstered piece of furniture is more than just a place to sit - it is often used here for cozy movie nights, reading a good book or receiving visitors. Therefore, the living room furnishings must be coordinated with the central piece of furniture.

The need for space-saving furniture is especially inStudent apartments and shared apartmentslarge. The Tiny Home Bed project is therefore aimed primarily at students and young people who live in shared apartments and need compact furnishing solutions. Since a room in a shared apartment usually only has a few square meters of living space, you should make optimal use of the available space. At this point, space-saving furniture is the best room solution.

“Today, the number of people living in small apartments due to limited housing options in urban areas is increasing. “I focused my project on developing a bed with storage space for compact living,” said Jang, who studied a master’s degree in product design at the University of Art and Design in Renens, Switzerland.

“My goal was to create a bed that was not only practical, but also simple and aesthetically attractive, because most space-saving furniture on the market today is very large and focuses only on functional features, such as foldable or transformable Furniture,” explains the designer.

Jang based her design on a “light and simple” bed with storage that she made from wood and fabric. “One of the main tasks was to build a lightweight yet sturdy wooden frame and fabric structure that would allow for easy shipping and assembly,” she said.

The designer then created a rail system with a polyester curtain at the top of the bed frame to allow users to access the storage space from any point. The design of the bed is simple and characterized by classic shapes and colors. The light wood bed frame harmonizes perfectly with the white curtain fabric and the result is a simple design that would fit in any room.

When designing the project, Jang was inspired by the rise of single-person households and the number of young people living in shared housing. Her research showed that the proportion of single-person households in her hometown of Seoul doubled between 2006 and 2016.

“I designed space-saving furniture because that's what people need today. By analyzing social trends, I built furniture that allows people to live comfortably,” she said.

“By combining two of the most important pieces of furniture – bed and storage – that take up the most space in the home environment, people benefit from more available space that they can use for other purposes.”

Recent market trends indicate that more and more designers are designing products for single-person households. The young designer's bed with storage space is just one example of how the furniture for thesmall 1-room apartmentscan look.
