Eames Plastic Armchairhas a long history and has received several awards since the 1950s. The American designers, Charles and Ray Eames, husband and wife, competed in the 1948 competition for “Low-Cost Furniture Design” by the Museum of Modern Art inNew Yorktook part and the project for a low-cost chair with armrests for mass production received second prize. Two years later, in cooperation with the furniture manufacturer “Herman Miller”, the first 2,000 armchair shells were released. The production process was a patent from Zenith for the manufacture of fiberglass radar fairings and the technology developed by Crysler made it possible to mount the same shell on different base frames. Eames Plastic Armchair is the first mass-produced chair and asDesign classicdesignated.
Eames Plastic Armchair – a chair of all time
Until 1989, Herman Miller for the USA and Vitra for Europe manufactured shells and Eames Plastic Armchairs in the same way in quantities. Then production was stopped for ecological reasons. Since 2004, Vitra chairs have been made largely from environmentally friendly, recyclable polypropylene. The shell of theChairis available in several versions – with or without armrests, with or withoutpad. The different frame is mounted to the shell using four screws and this determines the model of the chair.

All models are characterized by the distinctive shape of the seat shell with the contours of the human body. Conceptually close to the original model from the 1950s, DAX has a simple four-legged metal base frame. The plastic chair with armrests DAR, or also called “Aifel based”, has a chrome-plated steel wire construction. Gliders are also available for both models - made of felt for smooth floors and plastic for carpets. Eames Plastic Armchair is also known in the variant of the rocking chair – RAR, from the English “Ricking Armchair Rod Base”. Almost all models are optionally available with full upholstery made of polyurethane foam and covered with Hopsack fabric.
Eames Plastic Armchair – a plastic chair with a history
The design by Chares and Ray Eames was slightly modified by Vitra for today's reedition examples as the average height has increased. The adjustment is 20 mm in the height of the base frames. The color palette has also been renewed with new tones.
