A bed without a headboard is a beautiful thing in itself if you like simplicity. How about you have one of these?Make your own headboard? The bed board is perfect for giving your sleeping area an individual touch. You can use it to create something very special and incorporate any style elements in the room. Ever heard of the idea of pool noodles? What sounds rather cheesy at first turns out to be a wonderfully elegant accessory! You can make a padded headboard for your bed yourself using pool noodles!
TheCrafting with pool noodlesis nothing new, but you might not have thought of making it into a backrest for your own bed. Among other things, we have practical instructions for you with which you can make a headboard for your bed yourself out of velvet and pool noodles or pipe insulation - and even the biggest beginners can do it!
Make your own bed headboard with pool noodles – elegance in velvet
Our first idea has the curved shape of a rainbow. This also makes it possible to design each pool noodle in a different color and thus imitate the colors of the rainbow (in strong colors for a children's room, for example, or in delicate pastel tones). This idea is perfect if your beddoes not have a headboardor you would like to exchange it. This is what you need if you want to make this headboard for the bed yourself:
- approx. 10 pipe insulations (2.5 cm thick)
- 4 pool noodles
- PVC rigid foam board
- Topper for mattresses (made of visco foam, 4 cm thick or no thicker than the diameter of the pipes/noodles)
- Low temperature hot glue gun and appropriate glue
- Spray adhesive
- wide tape
- Carpet knife
- 7 meters of fabric of your choice
Make the upholstered headboard for the bed yourself – instructions
First, think about how big you want your headboard to be. In the example the dimensions are 152 x 228 cm. It is wider than the bed and therefore also provides a nice backdrop for the bedside tables. But you can also make a headboard for the bed that sits flush with the bed. Now form a sheet out of the swimming noodles and insulation by cutting them accordingly and temporarily sticking them together with adhesive tape. It is best to use the pole noodles outside as they are more stable and keep the insulation in shape.
Then cut the plate to size. It should be a little narrower than the bow. If you determine the dimensions in advance, you could also have this done at the hardware store. Then cover the insulation and pool noodles with fabric by cutting it to size and securing it with spray adhesive. This works particularly easily with the insulation because it is cut open and you can place the material perfectly inside, glue it in place and then pull it tight. You first have to cut the pool noodles lengthwise yourself.
If the noodles are covered, temporarily fix them back on the plate. Now measure the area underneath and transfer the shape to the topper, as you are ultimately building a padded headboard for the bed yourself. You can use an old sheet or something similar for this. Cut this shape out of the topper, spray the panel with glue and attach the topper. Then spray the topper and cover it with the fabric. Then glue the bow in place and cut off the two top corners so that the plate has the same curve as the bow.
Pool noodles as decoration for the bed headboard
If your bed already has a headboard, you can still spruce it up with pool noodles and add a nice decoration. This accessory to beautify beds with a headboard also has a rainbow shape and can be adapted to any furnishing style with the help of the fabrics used. If you would like to build the headboard for the bed yourself, you will need the following materials:
- Pool noodles (8 pieces in the example)
- thick yarn or thin rope (the thinner the yarn, the longer it takes to wrap)
- Hot glue
- wide tape
- thick rope
- Optional clamps as an aid
This is how the accessory is made
Since you are also making this headboard for the bed yourself with pool noodles, you will of course prepare them first. In the example, the smallest and lowest arch consists of a whole pool noodle and a small piece of another. But you could also start with a whole one. That depends on how big you want your bow to be. Then wrap the cut pool noodles with the yarn, securing it with glue every 3-5 rows.
Tipp: Wrapping works easier if you twist the noodle instead of moving the ball around the noodle. Depending on the thickness of the yarn and the time you have available, this can take anywhere from several hours to even a few days.
Then gradually fold the finished pool noodles back together like a bow, which also takes a little more time. Take the smallest roll and put on the second one. Apply a generous dab of glue to one end and hold the two pool noodles together for a while until the glue dries. Continue working your way to the other side at intervals. Clamps allow you to hold the elements together during the gluing process.
Finally, make the fringes from the thick rope. To do this, always fold a piece in half and stick (and glue) it into the opening of the pool noodle. You decide the length yourself. Be generous with the glue here. You can leave the ropes like this or untie them. Now all you have to do is attach the accessories to the board above the bed - with glue and a few screws for more support.
Half pool noodles on a board
If you have an unsightly board as a headboard and thisspruce it up a littleIf you want, you can also transform it with pool noodles. So you don't have to start from scratch if you want to make a bed headboard yourself, but you can make wonderful use of what you have and upholster it. If you would like to make a headboard for your bed yourself with upholstery, the inexpensive swimming noodles will come in handy.
Halve the foam noodles lengthwise. Then arrange them on the board, horizontally or vertically as you wish. If necessary, combine two noodles again if each one is too short. You can now cover the individual elements separately or you can first glue them in place and then cover them. If you are using wood as a base, you can also use a staple gun to stretch the fabric instead of gluing it. The terminals should then be on the back.
