Whether nicely dressed upLanterns for the tableor hanging lanterns for even more romance - with the beautiful macramé, every area becomes a place of well-being. So if you want to create a particularly cozy and nostalgic atmosphere, choose the macrame that is typical of the boho style. Today we will show you two ways you can make a lantern yourself. The first idea simply creates a jar with a pretty knotted design, while the second is for hanging. It's best to combine both to get a lot of lanterns and to illuminate and decorate your area at different heights. Now let's come to our first macrame lantern instructions:
Macrame lantern instructions – what you need:
For every macrame lantern instruction you need almost one and the same materials, namely:
- any glass with a neck (e.g. mason jar or jam jar)
- Macrame yarn in any color
- Scissors
- Tape measure
- Washi-Tape
- Candles
You also prepare a ring for hanging up the hanging lantern.
Macrame lantern instructions – Dress up a simple glass with cross knots
For these macrame lantern instructions, start by cutting a piece of yarn that is slightly longer than the circumference of the glass neck. At the end it should be long enough to be easily tied together. Place this piece in front of you. Then you will need several more pieces (odd numbers) that are at least twice as long as the glass if you double them. Now tie these pieces close together using the lark's knot on the first piece (double the thread, push the loop under the other piece of yarn, fold the loop forward over the thread and the ends through the loop). Don't forget to leave both ends free. Tie the thread around the neck of the jar. The other threads hang freely downwards.
Tie a square knot
Now you canstart knotting. The macrame lantern instructions for this seem complicated at first glance, but you will quickly realize that this is not the case. Take two of the lark knots. You now have 4 strands to tie. Leave the two middle ones hanging, take the two outer ones and tie a square knot for the macrame. To do this, place the left thread over the two middle ones, then pull the right thread through the loop and tighten the two threads.
Make three or four knots like this in total and repeat with the other strands. Then make three rows of square knots, only this time they are offset from the first row. This means that you use two adjacent outer strands of two knots as the middle ones (the left strand of one knot and the right strand of another). The next one is offset again, creating an interesting zigzag pattern.

Half strokes to finish
The conclusion is formed by so-called half beats. Of the four strands that stick out on one side of a prong, take one of the outer ones and hold it tightly. The other three strands are then knotted tightly to this first strand twice, one after the other, using half stitches. In the picture above you can see how half hitches are knotted. Repeat on the other side. Then you can put it in such glasseshanging macramePlace tea lights inside and enjoy the romantic atmosphere.
Hanging lanterns
Would you like onehanging macrameTo make your own lantern, you can use these macrame lantern instructions. This version is even quicker than the first. You will need five pieces of yarn of equal length. Don't skimp on the material. The longer they are, the better, because you can always shorten them if necessary. Gather the ends together, pull them halfway through the ring and tie a knot. Really tighten the knot.
Now place the ring with the ten strands in front of you and spread the strands out well. Now tie a knot with two strands at a height of about 1/3 (from the ring). Make sure that all nodes in a row are at the same height. Then make another row of knots, only this time you always tie one strand of one knot to one strand of another knot. Finally, tie all the strands together with a knot a little further down and you can then place the lantern inside and hang up the macrame. A quick, easy, yet impressive macrame lantern DIY!
