Make ombre hair yourself – instructions for blonde, brunette & the roots

Whether long hair, short hair, medium length or bob hairstyle, ombre hair can be found in every hairstyle and hair length and continues to be a big trend. Therefore, it may be superfluous to mention that this is a smooth transition from a darker hair color to a lighter one, or vice versa. There are also many variations with colorful hair colors. Since coloring your hair at the hairdresser costs a lot of money and has to be recolored relatively often, more and more women would rather try it out themselves at home. And if you already have some experience with coloring on your own, nothing stands in your way. Simply use our helpful instructions with which you can easily do ombre hair yourself and create the unique look yourself.

How can you dye ombre hair yourself?

If you would like to dye your ombre hair yourself, you have two options when choosing the colors. Either you use your own hair color as the base color and buy one or two more, each of which is about one or two shades lighter or darker (for reverse ombre), or you also color over your natural hair color. Then the second color should of course be chosen depending on the chosen base color. Otherwise, you will of course still need the typical tools for coloring: brushes, gloves, a towel to cover the shoulders, a hair clip and, in this case, aluminum foil.

It is also important to find the right time. As a rule, the hair should not be freshly washed. Instead, at least two days after your last hair wash is best. When bleaching, it is not uncommon for the ends of the hair to get an unsightly green cast. You can avoid such a result by using a so-called silver shampoo.

How exactly you dye your hair depends on the original color. For this reason, we have also put together various instructions that you can follow.

Brown or dark brown hair

To create a perfect and even transition, it is recommended to use not just one shade to lighten, but another that will serve as a transition between the dark and light ends. Accordingly, due to the two hair colors, you should allow a little more time for the coloring process. Otherwise, dye as usual and also with the usual utensils already mentioned.

1. You must first divide individual sections of hair. Firstly, pin the guard hair up above the ears. You can use the pointed side of the coloring brush to separate the sections. Divide the lower sections of hair that you have not pinned up into two parts by creating a middle parting. Simply place these two pieces over your shoulder. If your hair is too short for this, you can also use hair clips or clips.

2. What you need first is the lighter of the two shades you use to color the tips. When coloring these lower hairs, it's best to start at chin level and work your way down. If your hair is shorter, you can start further down. The finished colored ends are wrapped in aluminum foil, which protects the top hair from unwanted coloring and also guarantees that the colored strands do not disturb the hair.

3. Now continue with the top hair. Start again at the same height you chose for the lower sections of hair. Also wrap the top hair in aluminum foil and then let the color work for as long as stated on the packaging.

4. Before you continue with the color for the transition, wash out the first color. If you want to create perfect ombre hair yourself, you should now use the second shade. To do this, mix them together.

5. The hair is pinned up again as for the first hair color or placed over the shoulders. The second shade goes on the area above the previous color. A smooth transition is created by brushing it a little into the first color. Start with the lower sections of hair first and then continue with the top hair. Use aluminum foil again and let the hair color work as directed.

6. Now rinse out the hair color, wash your hair if desired and be sure to use the included conditioner to care for your hair. Hair treatments are mandatory once a week to avoid breaking the bleached hair ends.

If blonde is the base color for the ombre, you can combine it with a darker hair color. This variant is then called Reverse Ombre, so to speak the reverse Ombre. If you dare, you can also use a pastel pink, green or blue instead of the dark shade. This is also very trendy and is quite common as a hairstyle for women. The method of coloring is a little different from that for brown hair with ombre, as only a new shade of color is used here.

1. To dye your hair in an ombre look, divide the hair again as described above. Then you can get started and do the ombre hair yourself as follows:

2. Mix the chosen hair color according to the instructions on the packaging and start applying it to the ends. Depending on the length of your hair, start again at ear level.

3. This time you don't create the transition with a second shade. Instead, you need a comb. Use it to pull up the color that you have applied to the tips. The hair is covered irregularly and that is also the goal. The mix of natural and colored hair creates the perfect transition.

4. Wrap the hair again in aluminum foil, repeat steps 2 and 3 with the top hair and let the hair color take effect. Finally, rinse the color, wash your hair if desired and use a conditioner.

Color the roots dark

Even if you do the ombre hair yourself and have over-dyed your natural hair color, at some point it will be time to do the roots. The exposure time begins from the moment you start applying the hair color. Mix these as described in the packaging. Create a middle part, starting at the hairline on the right side. Apply paint to the roots with the bottle and brush it down with a brush. Work your way up to ear level.

Then massage it in well again with your fingers. Repeat the whole thing with the left side and the back of the head. Once the color is well distributed, use your fingers to pull it further down (to about chin height) to create the transition. Then let it work again, wash it out and care for it.
