Contrary to popular belief, the French manicure neither originated in France nor was it invented by a French citizen. In fact, it is an invention of the American Jeff Pink. In 1978, he developed the first DIY French manicure kit for Hollywood actresses. He says the directors complained about how long it took actresses to change their nail colors, so they asked him to come up with a color to match each wardrobe change. The stylists and actresses loved the simple, feminine and elegant look that Pink created.
Pink then traveled to Paris and manicured the nails of models at a fashion show. When he returned to Los Angeles, he called it the “French manicure” in honor of his friends in Paris who supported his vision of nail design.
