Nail powder instead of nail polish: This is how the new beauty trend works

Dip powder nails are the new nail trend that has taken over Instagram! There are already more than 160,000 posts with the hashtag #dippowdernails. According to Pinterest's hottest trends report for 2019, searches for nail powder have increased by 442 percent compared to last year! What makes the new technology so special? Such nails are said to last three to four weeks, twice as long as gel manicures, and are healthier than gel polish! We'll tell you what the hype is all about.

The trend comes from the USA. The nails are first painted with a basecoat, then dipped into a fine powder and then fixed with a topcoat. The secret is that the powder only sticks to the painted surface. The excess amount can easily be tapped off and removed with a brush.

The biggest difference between gel polish and nail powder is that you don't need UV light to seal the color. Instead of using liquid nail polish, we get the color from a pigmented powder. The powder form can also usually be applied much more quickly. “But is it healthier than gel or acrylic polish?” you're probably thinking. They are similar in that both provide an extra layer of protection for natural nails. But the powder promises a longer hold and removal is much easier. By the way, it should not contain any chemicals, but rather special vitamins that contribute to additional strengthening of the nails.

How does nail design work?

Application:

  1. First, the nails are cleaned well and removed from old nail polish. Then use an electric polishing file or buffer to smooth out any rough spots on the nails and create a clean surface for the color powder.
  2. Cut and shape the nails (consider oneoval or almond shapeto file).
  3. Now the cuticle should be pushed back.
  4. Apply a base layer to the dry nail.
  5. Then the nails are soaked in the color powder at a 45 degree angle. Depending on the desired color effect, the dipping should be repeated. The excess can be easily removed with a brush.
  6. Meanwhile, each nail is sealed with a topcoat. Let it dry and you're done!

The process takes approximately 90 minutes in total. After three weeks, the manicure should still look in great shape. However, dip manicures can last up to a month or longer, depending on post-treatment care.

Before you visit a nail salon to try out the new nail trend, keep in mind that there are risks when it comes to hygiene. Many nail salons do not carry out the treatment for hygiene reasons. It is incredibly unsanitary when multiple customers dip their fingers into the same powder container. Even if you simply sprinkle the powder over your nails, the rest will fall back into the container. So there is a possibility of bacterial nail infections being transmitted between clients.

Apply to natural nails yourself

Applying dip powder to natural nails is child's play! There are now many brands on the market that offer such kits for beginners. The nail sets contain everything you need for creative dip designs: color powder, base coat, top coat, etc. Once you have decided on a brand, you can watch a few video tutorials online. And most importantly, before you apply the nail powder, find out how to remove it! Usually it workswith aluminum foil and acetone.

  • Your natural nail can become very fragile.

As with all nail enhancements, there is a risk of your nails becoming dehydrated and brittle. The removal process is crucial. It's always safest to return to the nail salon and have the dip powder removed.

  • Aftercare is extremely helpful in restoring the health of your nail.

Excessive exposure to chemicals, such as those found in household cleaners, can lead to weakened cuticles or brittle natural nails. It is recommended to wear protective gloves to protect both the skin and your natural nails. To restore nail health after treatment, try applying cuticle oils and high-quality moisturizers several times a day.
