Bauhaus style house made of granite and concrete – modern architecture in Mexico

Architecture in the Bauhaus style is considered contemporary and should be viewed as a complete work in which the properties of the materials shape the formal language. The structure and furniture are characterized by their clearly structured, abstract, geometric shape without any ornamental surface design. True to the motto: “Form arises through function,” in 2013 Surber Barber Choate + Hertlein Architects designed a Bauhaus-style house near San Pedro Garza Garía, Mexico.

Bauhaus style is one of the many design movements that appeared in the 20th century, but was most closely concerned with the theme of “modernism” and implemented the guiding principle “less is more”. Although the school of design founded by Walter Gropius only existed for 14 years, it gained many followers and influenced not only German but also international artists, architects and designers. Inspired by the box-shaped architecture, this project was also created by US architects. They combined granite,Concrete with glassand in the interior they added wooden accents such as suspended ceilings and wall paneling.

The house is located in the mountains of northern Mexico and the offset architecture is completely in keeping with the stiff terrain. The exterior walls are largely made of clear glass and allow a direct view of untouched nature from every corner of the house. In connection with the surrounding landscape are alsothe indoor and outdoor areasMainly made of granite and concrete and impress with their strength and elegant appearance. Upholstered furniture in neutral colors and suspended wooden ceilings, which are designed differently in each area, provide a cozy touch.

The house is characterized by an angled floor plan. The rooms flow into each other and in every direction there is a terrace or a large window that invites you to linger and enjoy the view. Several outdoor zones are available: a terrace and an outdoor pool with lounge, a garden with water cascades and lawn, a wooden deck with seating. A special highlight is the bridge with glass railings over the cliff.
