The Netflix documentary “Will & Harper” shows a very special friendship
In our world, strength counts more than vulnerability. The more you have to„“Will & Harper” deserves great credit for the fact that the two of them dare to open up and share their very personal experiences on the subject of transgender. Ferrell has a lot of questions. Some are almost childishly naive – “How does it feel to have breasts?” Others, full of genuine concern: “Did you want to take your own life?” All very intimate questions that you would only dare ask, if at all, to very close friends. On the journey togetherAfter going to LA, Will Ferrell will experience and thus understand what a transition really means. How difficult it is for trans* people to take the step. And why it is so important to support them.

Conclusion: A documentary worth watching that will make you laugh but also cry
OneTraveling across the USA is far too dangerous today as a trans* woman alone. The political discussions are too charged. But politics is not the focus of “Will & Harper”. But the friendship. With everything that goes with it: sometimes the two are carefree and silly, often brave and brutally honest, but also naive. Because Will underestimates the threat to Harper - even in his presence. In one scene he has to experience how cruel the world can be for people who are different. How hateful strangers can become. Will's initial ignorance turns into deep concern, guilt, and ultimately anger at himself for putting Harper in this position.
“There’s hate out there,” Will Farrell said at the press tour for the film. “But I don’t understand why trans* people should be threatening to me as a cis man. Harper is finally who she was always meant to be. Whether you can understand it or not, why should you care if someone is happy? Why is this a threat to you? If the trans community is a threat to you, I think it’s because you’re not confident or secure with yourself.”
“A friend, is a friend, is a friend. Till the end…” sings their mutual friend and SNL colleague Kristen Wigg in the end credits. Nothing more can be said about it. Yes: Both the documentary and the song are on the shortlist for the Oscars 2025. We're keeping our fingers crossed.Stream on Netflix – this way!
