The best series of 2024: From “Maxton Hall” to “Black Doves” – you have to see them

The best series of 2024 from Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and Co.

I enjoy watching series for my life - and yes, also for my job. There were still moments throughout the year when I thought to myself: There's nothing to watch at all! And then I preferred to watch “Seinfeld” for the 700th time. But when I think about the year, there were always absolute highlights! So if you're now thinking about what you could watch between the years (because you've finally found time and aren't doing it for work) - then I would like to recommend these - for me - the best series of 2024 to you.

These are the best series of 2024

Nowadays it's difficult: you can no longer watch everything on Netflix alone, but Prime Video, Sky/Wow, Disney+, Apple TV+ and Co. also have good series. You actually need every streaming service to be able to enjoy the full range of series. That's why I've sorted the best series for you by streaming service. This means you can simply pretend that you haven't noticed the others at all. Or maybe you’re thinking about buying another subscription…

The best series on Netflix 2024

Netflix has released some of the best series again in 2024. These are my favorites.

“Two in one day”

The adaptation of the bestseller, which already started in 2011was made into a film, found its way to Netflix in 2024. Dexter (Leo Woodall) and Emma (Ambika Mod) come from different worlds and have been together for about 20 yearsrunning. Surely no feelings will be hurt?

The end. Who hasn't gotten over it yet? A series is simply the perfect format to realize this story. In 14 episodes, each episode shows July 15th of a specific year. The story develops slowly and you feel really carried away. Until the end hits you in the pit of your stomach.

“Nobody Wants This”

A romcom series? Yes, please! In ten episodes, “Nobody Wants This” tells the story of sex podcaster Joanne (Kristen Bell) and Rabbi Noah (Adam Brody). Joanne is not Jewish - and Noah is supposed to serve as a role model for his community. Is that possible without a Jewish girlfriend? Both of their families are struggling with this. However, that doesn't stop the two from continuing their love story.

Meet cute? Check. Great chemistry between the two? Check. Come from different worlds? Check, check. If you've ever wished your favorite romcom would last longer, “Nobody Wants This” is simply perfect for you. At the same time, it's a slightly different cast of characters that is also exciting outside of the love story. And oneis still coming!

“Kaos”

The bad news first:Unfortunately, it has already been canceled by Netflix. But it's still worth watching the first season with Jeff Goldblum as Zeus. He learns from a prophecy that his end is imminent and chaos will reign. In the middle of this prophecy stands Riddy or Eurydice (Aurora Robinson Perrineau), who is supposed to contribute to the fall of the gods. Can Zeus prevent this? Do we even want that?

Anyone who loves Greek myths will be captivated by the series. Some background knowledge makes the series even better! All the characters are entertaining – oneSpecial Placebut I have it for Dionysus.

“A New Summer”

Did you miss Netflix's crime thriller highlight in autumn 2024? Then the time between the years is perfect to catch up on that.(original: “The Perfect Couple”) is a mix of “Big Little Lies” and “The White Lotus” and once again sheds light on the lives of the beautiful and rich. Instead of a dream wedding, someone is murdered: and now it's time to catch the killer.

An exciting crime thriller with an even better cast: Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning and Meghann Fahy are all women who play an important role in the murder investigation. In addition, the setting à la “The White Lotus” is simply fantastic to look at – perfect for days with winter blues.

“Black Doves”

Are you an absolute thriller fan? Then you can't miss this series!plays a role in which she has never been seen before. Helen Webb seems to have the perfect, normal life - if it weren't for this double life. Helen is an agent. And after her affair is killed, she vows revenge. No matter which way.

The mini seriesis especially great because it is self-contained and tells everything that needs to be said in six episodes. There are no filler episodes and no storyline that leads nowhere. If you want to see a really good thriller again, you should definitely tune in here.

The best series on Disney+ 2024

On Disney+ there is not only Marvel, Star Wars and Co. (but also!), but also crazy mysteries and comedy.

“Doctor Odyssey”

Yep, it's “Grey's Anatomy” on the dream ship, and it's great! The action takes place on the “Odyssey”, a cruise ship where mainly the rich and famous stay and want to have a good time. But what happens if they carry rare diseases with them? Time for the extremely attractive Doctor Odyssey and his extremely attractive crew!

Have you ever wished “Grey's Anatomy” was a little more condensed and a little more ridiculous? Here is “Doctor Odyssey.” In every episode there is a new problem, be it party-loving singles or a wedding party that brings with them new illnesses. In between there is of course a lot of sex, as is normal among doctors. We love.

“Pauline”

I bet you haven't seen this series yet. Unfortunately, the series was somewhat lost on Disney+ in May 2024, but I recommend it to you again here. “Pauline” is German-Series from the creators behind the popular series “How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)”. Pauline actually knows what she wants - and that's definitely not to get pregnant. But despite contraception, it happens: she is pregnant from her one-night stand Lukas. But not only that, she also develops superpowers that she simply can't use at all.

Horror and comedy go together really well – add a little bit of absurdity on top and the series is perfect. Because yes: Luke is the son of the she-devil. This German series is really impressive because the special effects are also quite convincing. By the way: “Maxton Hall” star Damian Hardung has a small guest role!

“Shōgun”

The series, which broke all Emmy records and also convinced critics, should at least be put on your watch list. “Shōgun” is the most awarded single-season series in Emmy history and is based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell. It is about Lord Yoshii Toranaga, who wants to reunify Japan. But more than that, it's about translation and the power of the word. 90 percent of the series' dialogue is in Japanese.

Admittedly, I had to get into the series first. But then I was really convinced. The complex depiction of the female characters surprised me in a series like this, and I can only warmly recommend it if you are interested in historical dramas.

The best series on Prime Video 2024

One series in particular was convincing on Prime Video in 2024, but the rest is also impressive.

“Maxton Hall”

Nobody could get past this Prime series:.and Damian Hardung play James and Ruby. Two students from different worlds who crash together - and from which a passionate love story develops.

The series went viral on TikTok immediately after its launch in May - and not just in Germany. The series, which can also be described as “Enemies to Lovers”, was equally celebrated internationally and immediately catapulted the two main actors to Hollywoodthis oneCliffhanger, I can't wait for the next season to come out!

“Fallout”

This series definitely surprised me in the spring. After the apocalypse, only the most privileged of society squeeze themselves into various bunkers and can continue living their beautiful lives underground. But in the wasteland on the surface, life goes on - and eventually catches up with those below.

As a fan of the “Fallout” games, I have to say that this series managed to be a good video game adaptation. And that's not easy. But “Fallout,” with the wonderful Ella Purnell as Lucy, manages to make the series exciting for new fans at the same time – and to make existing fans happy with all the Easter eggs.

“My Lady Jane”

With “Bridgerton” now on hiatus again, we needed something to fill the hole. And then she came:. She delivers love, intrigue, fancy dresses, queens, weddings and lots– exactly what we wanted. “My Lady Jane” asks the question: What if the real character Jane Gray hadn’t died? What then? And tells an extremely funny, dramatic and romantic story of Lady Jane and Lord Guildford Dudley.

Yes, the series has unfortunately already been canceled. But that doesn't matter to me, because I still think “My Lady Jane” is better than “Bridgerton”, simply because it doesn't take itself so seriously. The series has an “enmies to lovers” plot, a funny narrator and an absurdly funny premise. Simply perfect for a gray binge weekend.

The best series on Sky/Wow

The streaming service doesn’t just have “House of the Dragon.”

“The Penguin”

Do you want to see more of “The Batman” universe with Robert Pattinson? “The Penguin” picks up immediately after the “Batman” film and revolves around Colin Farrell’s Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot aka the Penguin. After one of the biggest gangsters in Gotham, Carmine Falcone, dies in the film, he leaves behind a power vacuum that the other gangsters naturally want to take over. Because it's not just the penguin who wants power - Falcone's daughter Sofia also has plans to seize power.

The series is a must for all “Batman” fans anyway – even if he himself doesn’t appear (HBO doesn’t have the rights to that). Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti face each other here and deliver a terrific showdown. The “Batman” universe is no longer just male.

The best series on Apple TV+

Yes, there are good series here too. Maybe a subscription will be worth it soon?

“Lady in the Lake”

andplay against and with each other in a Baltimore of the 1960s. Housewife Maddie Schwartz doesn't want to put up with one tragedy after another and promptly decides to become a journalist. But don't forget: This is the 1960s in the USA - not an easy time for women.

We get atmospheric noirwith a lot of self-determination. The story is exciting, the twists are surprising, but above all the two main characters are completely convincing.is the perfect mix of clever investigator, empathetic friend and fighter for equal rights.
