The French province of Champagne in the early 19th century: After the death of her husband, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin takes over(Haley Bennett) took over the management of the family winery at the age of just 27 - a daring step at a time when there was no place for women in the business world. Instead of retiring to a respectable widow's life or marrying again, the young woman resists the sale of the winery and expands the family's small champagne business into an international empire. With determination and passion, the widow Clicquot maneuvered the company through turbulent times, laid the foundation for modern champagne production with her innovations and became the “Grande Dame of Champagne” with her house's exclusive sparkling wine.

The title role was played by Haley Bennett (“Girl on the Train”), who also served as a producer alongside “Pride and Prejudice” director Joe Wright and Christina Weiss Lurie (“Inside Job”). Other roles include Sam Riley (“Control”), Tom Sturridge (“Sandman”) and “Peaky Blinders” star Natasha O'Keeffe. Bryce Dessner from The National was responsible for the music.
