Love killer money: so many relationships fail because of it

Money can quickly become a point of dispute in relationships - and even lead to separation. Why honesty is crucial here.

Well, have you ever argued with your partner about money? Or may you even have a separation behind you because your partner had financial secrets in front of you?

According to a study on couple finance of the financial startupForget FinanceIn any case, 43 % of the respondents have had a bigger argument about love. As part of the study, which was carried out by the Poll research institute Appinio in November 2023, 1,002 people between the ages of 30 and 45 were interviewed.

In 23 % of the respondents, the dispute over finances even led to separation.What the partner spent money on was the most common reason for separation with 21 %. Just behind it followed the lack of financial foresight with 20 %.

Many couples also have secrets when it comes to their finances and are not always honest. 31 % confessed that they have already lied to their partner when it comes to money.

However, men stand out negatively here. They were not always honest with their partner in 38 %. For comparison: only 25 % of women had financial secrets in front of their partners.

So I often experience that men think as a provider due to their understanding of roles that they could not discuss financial worries with their partner. But it is important that we try to interact in our relationships at eye level and see ourselves as a team, also with regard to finance. ”

Transparency when it comes to finance is also extremely important with regard to equality between men and women.
