Apple pie from the tray: simple recipe
Our recipe not only promises a juicy apple cake that tastes beautifully aromatic thanks to the sour apple varieties Granny Smith or Boskop. The highlight: a glaze made from caramel sauce. This makes the apple pie from the tray a very special treat.
Ingredients for the apple pie from the tray:
- 250 grams of flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 200 grams of sugar
- 200 grams of brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 225 Gramm Butter
- 235ml water
- 120 ml buttermilk
- 2 eggs (size L)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 large Granny Smith or Boskop apples
For the glaze
- 110 Gramm Butter
- 60 ml milk
- 375 grams powdered sugar, sifted
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 60 ml caramel sauce
- coarse salt flakes (is available here on Amazon*)
And this is how it works:
1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees fan oven. Thoroughly grease a baking tray or use release spray (is available here on Amazon*) spray. Peel the apples, remove the core and cut into small pieces.
2. In a large bowl, mix the dry ingredients, i.e. the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, brown sugar and cinnamon, well.
3. In a medium saucepan (you'll need to fit the flour mixture in later) over medium heat, warm butter and water until butter is melted. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Then remove the pot from the heat and stir in the flour mixture until there are no more lumps of flour.
4. Now stir in the buttermilk, eggs and vanilla extract and finally fold in the apple pieces.
5. Pour the dough onto the baking tray and smooth it out. Bake in the oven for about 20 minutes. Then let it cool on a cake rack for at least 10 to 15 minutes.
6. For the glaze Heat butter and milk in a saucepan until butter is melted. Gradually stir in powdered sugar. Stir in vanilla extract and caramel sauce. Pour the caramel glaze over the warm cake.
Tipp:Sprinkle a few coarse salt flakes over the caramel glaze for a special kick and a slight crunch. If you don't like the combination of salt and caramel, simply leave out the flakes.
Refine apple pie from the tray
Salt flakes are not the only way to pimp up the apple pie from the tray. If you like it even crunchier, you can add a handful of coarsely chopped nuts to the dough. For example, roasted hazelnuts or almond sticks taste delicious.
Another ingenious trick to give the apple cake an even more intense taste: almond extract! It gives the cake a great marzipan note and goes wonderfully with the sweet and sour apples. Simply add a teaspoon of it to the dough. You can buy high-quality almond extract on Amazon here*
