Naming a child is probably one of the most important tasks for expectant parents before the birth. After all, it should fit the child and please dad and mom.

But while 2024 ended with the obvious classics like Emilia and Noah as first names for newborns, things could look very different for 2025.

Name researcher Knud Bielefeld has been analyzing birth reports from Germany since the 1990s and continues to identify trends and developments. It also has a trend for 2025.

The top ten list of the most popular first names in 2024 shows no surprises. As in 2023, Emilia, Sophia and Emma remain the frontrunners for girls' names. Among the boys, Noah, Matteo and Elias lead the top ten. That was too2023so.

Which names are coming in 2025?

Even if no one can say yet which names will be particularly popular in 2025, some predictions can be made. Bielefeld is sure that the name Emilia will be popular again with girls in 2025. Just like the names Noah and Matteo for the boys.

“Fashion names last for a while – it usually takes ten to twenty years for a name to enter the top ten and another ten to twenty years for it to fall out again,” explains Bielefeld. The name researcher now has this in an interview withSat 1 breakfast televisionbetrayed.

The girls' names Malia and Hailey have also gained significant momentum. For the boys it was the name Emilio. It could be that these three trend names will make it into the top ten in 2025.

Another trend that could perhaps become established in 2025 is old German names. The analysis of the most popular first names in 2024 shows that retro names are also on the rise.

Bielefeld explains: “One of many trends is that old names that have become extinct are being revived. Saxony in particular is the hotbed of new retro names.” Names like Erwin and Kurt among the boys and Gerda and Erika in Saxony are clearly on the rise.

Who knows? Maybe the trend will catch on across Germany and old German classics will be back in fashion in the new year.
