Upcycling ideas for old towels

Used towels don't have to go in the trash. With these craft ideas you can give them a second life.

Last weekend it hit me: the urge to really clean out. First up was the basement (which was really long overdue). Afterwards, I worked through the cupboards in my apartment and got rid of some old items that had accumulated over time - including old towels.

But they don't necessarily have to go straight into the old clothing container. Many practical things can be conjured up from old towels. Today I'll show you how to give these old materials a second life.

1. Cleaning rags made from old towels

While we're on the subject of tidying up and cleaning: you can never have enough cleaning rags. If your towels have become faded and thin, you won't want to use them to dry off after the shower, but they work really well as cleaning tools.

To do this, cut your old towels into elongated rectangles and sew them together on the outer sides so that they don't fray. You can use it to wipe dust or pick up spills.

2. Reusable cosmetic pads

Instead of disposable cotton pads, you can also use reusable cosmetic pads that can be put in the washing machine after use. To do this, simply cut round pads out of an old towel. If you want, you can also sew two pads together to create multi-layered, thicker pads.

3. Paw cleaner for dogs

Dirty paws are not uncommon after a long walk. In this case, put a few discarded towels in a basket next to the front door (or in the trunk of the car). This allows you to quickly and easily remove rain or mud from your four-legged friend's paws.

4. Use old towels as dog and cat toys

Speaking of four-legged friends: you can easily make toys for dogs and cats out of an older towel. To do this, cut the fabric into several strips and knot them tightly together. The “towel bone” is ideal for throwing, playing and tugging.

You can also use the old towel as a sniffing mat. To do this, roll up several treats so that your four-legged friend has to work a little harder to get the reward.

5. Knee pad when gardening

Old towels make excellent knee pads when gardening. The material can easily get dirty – unlike your own trousers. The material also protects your joints and you have less pain when pulling weeds or planting.

6. Use old towels as bibs

Instead of buying expensive bibs, you can also use old towels for the little ones. The thicker edges of a large towel are suitable for making ribbons. Alternatively, you can also use snap fasteners or Velcro fasteners (you can get it here on Amazon*) attach to the homemade bib.

7. Padding material for the next move

Are you moving with friends or family soon? To prevent anything from breaking, you can use old textiles, such as towels, to wrap fragile items or fill gaps in boxes.
