I am an absolute Christmas fan and for me there are many things that go into a successful Christmas. In addition to the classic baking of cookies, getting presents or decorating for Christmas, there is definitely one thing on my agenda in the run-up to Christmas.
It may sound a bit cheesy, but the film “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella” is a must-see for me at Christmas. Why? I love the story and the snowy pictures always put me straight into the Christmas spirit. So the television has to be used this time too.

What is “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella” about?
“Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella” is a modern fairy tale adaptation and a real Christmas classic. The 1973 film is based on the Cinderella fairy tale.
The German-Czech co-production is about the titular Cinderella (played by Libuse Safránková). The young woman lives with her stepmother and sister on an estate, but is humiliated and treated badly by them.
One day, as Cinderella is washing clothes in the forest, she meets the prince and his guard. After a little prank that stops the prince from shooting a deer, they go on a chase, with Cinderella able to return to the estate unnoticed.
When the annual ball is coming up, to which unfortunately only Cinderella's stepmother and her sister are invited, the farm servant is sent into town to buy clothes and fabrics. On the way back, three hazelnuts fall into his lap and he gives them to Cinderella.
What no one knows: They are enchanted nuts. The first nut conjures up a hunting robe with which Cinderella, unrecognized and disguised as a young man, meets the prince a second time. Here she impresses the prince with her shooting skills and is given a ring as a reward. She rides away unrecognized.
On the day of the ball, Cinderella asks her stepmother to come to the ball with her. She answers the question in the negative and mixes lentils with corn on the ground. She is said to have sorted these by the time she returns. Thanks to the help of pigeons, the task is quickly solved.
Cinderella opens a second nut. Included is a beautiful ball gown with face veil. Together with her horse Nicholas, she rides to the castle in a ball gown and dances with the prince. He doesn't recognize her again. Nevertheless, he wants to marry her straight away.
Cinderella reacts with a little riddle for the prince to solve and disappears. On the castle steps she loses a shoe in her haste and rides away wearing only one shoe.
The prince finds the shoe and gives chase. Finally he ends up at the estate where Cinderella lives. Since he has the shoe with him, he lets every young woman try it on. Nobody fits in, but then the servant remembers Cinderella, who has been hiding.
After she has conjured up a wedding dress from the third hazelnut, she shows herself to the prince and puts on the shoe. This fits and the prince recognizes Cinderella as the huntress and also the mysterious woman at the ball. The film ends with a happy ending in which the two ride together through a snowy landscape.
