Throw away or keep silicate bags?

That's why you should definitely save the small bags from the shoebox.

Many packages ordered include small silica gel bags. Most of the time, the bags labeled “Silica Gel” are thrown away carelessly. The bags can be great helpers in the household.

Who doesn't know them - the little bags with the inscription "Do not eat" that are often found in the packaging of shoes, bags or electronic items.

These are silica gel bags, also known as silica gel bags, which are used to absorb moisture and thus protect the products. After we unpack our purchases, the bags usually end up in the trash. But that no longer has to be the case from now on. Because silica gel bags can be reused very practically in the household.

What exactly is silica gel?

Silica gel, also known as silica gel, is, despite the name, not a liquid gel. Rather, the bags contain small plastic beads that have a rubbery consistency and bind moisture.

Although it often says “Throw away” on the outside, undyed silica gel is harmless and can be kept for a while.

However, for safety reasons, it should not be consumed or rubbed into the eyes. That's why you should have the bagsout of the reach of children or petsstore. Also store them in a place where they are protected from (air) moisture, otherwise they will quickly lose their practical properties.

You can use the small silica gel bags for this

These free little sachets can be quite useful. We'll tell you how you can reuse them.

1. Dry damp shoes

Have you stepped in a puddle or had a sweaty workout? Simply place as many silica gel bags as possible in your shoes overnight. They gently absorb moisture so that the footwear dries quickly.

2. Bind unpleasant smells

Speaking of sports and sweat: If your sports bag starts to smell musty, silica gel bags can help. They ensure that moisture (in this case sweat from sports clothing) does not penetrate the bag or absorbs it less quickly.

It is also common for clothing to smell unpleasant, especially in winter or in damp basements. Just put a few bags between your things.

3. Store electronic devices in a dry place

Not only discarded clothing is often stored in the basement, old laptops or cameras that haven't been used for a long time are also often stored there. In this case, pack a few silica gel bags with the devices. This means the electronics are better protected against the (air) moisture in the basement.

4. Protect photos and documents

Photos are valuable souvenirs that should be protected from moisture and light. To be on the safe side, you can put a few silica gel bags in the photo storage box.

For important documents, for example, you can put a bag in the cling film in which the paper is filed. This way you can also protect them from moisture accidentally penetrating.

5. Protect tools from rust

Metal tools such as iron and steel tend to rust, especially in damp environments such as garages and basements. To counteract this, silica bags can be a simple and effective solution.

Putting a few of these bags in the toolbox or drawer will help keep moisture out, extending the life of the tools.
