Why you should disinfect your bed linen in summer

Bed hygiene is important all year round, but you should in the summerYour bed linendisinfect. Researchers from the Cleveland Clinic reveal why this is the case and how disinfection works.

Disinfect bedding: Mites and bacteria can inflame the skin and trigger allergies

Around 1 million mites can feed on the skin cells that people lose every day. They fall off with every touch and friction. We lose most of it in bed when we turn over at night. So it's no wonder that bed linen is colonized by dust mites and bacteria.

One of the most common consequences of such a colonization is allergies. But mites and bacteria can do much more. They penetrate hair follicles, skin cracks and small wounds and can cause skin inflammation.

People with skin problems should therefore change their bed linen at least twice a week and disinfect dirty bed linen.

Disinfect bedding: Pets can transmit fungal diseases

If your dog or cat sleeps in your bed, you should disinfect your bedding more often than usual during the summer months. Pets can transmit fungal diseases and the risk is twice as high, especially in summer when you spend longer outside.

So it is very important that bed linen is disinfected in summer.Dr. Vijgives several tips on how to maintain hygiene in summer:

  • Every morning, air the bed linen for 20 minutes and only then make the bed. The bed linen should be able to dry so that bacteria and mites have no chance.
  • Wash the pillows, mattress covers and duvets once at the beginning and once at the end of the summer season.
  • Wash the bed linen at at least 60 degrees and then tumble dry. Alternatively, you can hang the bed linen in a sunny location and let it dry.
  • If the bed linen can only be washed up to 40 degrees Celsius, you can add special cleaning products to the detergent.
  • Change the bed linen once a week. In hot weather you can even change them twice a week.
