Actress Emilia Clarke, who played Queen Daenerys, says she was pressured to film nude at the start of the show, but now she's become a lot wiser. She has revealed that she is uncomfortable performing in some of her nude scenes in Game Of Thrones for this reason. The British actress played Queen Daenerys Targaryen in HBO's sprawling epic, which became infamous for its explicit depiction of sex and violence.
Emilia Clarke can already choose roles
Clarke, who was just 23 when she started filming Game Of Thrones, said she had tears in her eyes before filming certain "terrifying" nude scenes. Speaking on actor Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast, she said:
“I took the job and then they sent me the scripts. I read it and I thought, 'Oh, there's the rub!'
“But I was fresh out of drama school and approached it as a job. If it's in the script, it's clearly required. It is what it is and I will understand it and this is what I will do and everything will be cool.”
“I've never been on a film set like this before. I've been on a film set twice before, and now I'm completely naked in front of all these people. I don't know what to do or what they expect from me. Regardless of whether there is nudity or not, I had spent that first season thinking that I wasn't worthy of asking for anything. I’m not worthy of needing anything.”
At the age of 33, the actress said she was scared. But her film partner in Game Of Thrones,Jason Momoa, is said to have protected her.
Collegial support and pressure on set
In the podcast, Shepard brought up a scene from season 1 in which Momoa's character Khal Drogo "practically rapes" Daenerys on her wedding night. “He cried more than I did,” Clarke replied. “It's only now that I realize how lucky I was with this because this could have gone many, many, many different ways,” she said.
WeilJason Momoa experience- he was an experienced actor who had done a few things before he got into this - he said:
“Sweetheart, that’s how it’s supposed to be, that’s how it’s not supposed to be, and I’m going to make sure that’s the damn look.”
He always said, “Can we get her a damn robe? She’s shaking!” … He was so kind and considerate and cared about me as a person.”
After the series, Emilia Clarke says she is now much more confident about what she is comfortable with and the level of nudity directors require for a scene. "I've had fights on set where I said, no, the tide stays high, and they said, 'You don't want to disappoint your Game of Thrones fans.' HBO and Game Of Thrones developer representatives David Benioff and DB Weiss have been contacted for comment.
