A shark measuring around 4 meters in size was found dead in Mallorca

A dead shark was found on Tuesday morning in the harbor entrance of Puerto Portals, on the coast of Mallorca. The animal is a female over 4.10 meters tall and had a severe wound on her back, possibly caused by a ship's propeller. With the help of divers, the shark's body was fished out of the harbor using a crane.

“On Monday afternoon, a fisherman reported the possibility that there was a live shark near the rocks of Puerto Portals. After the marine workers checked this report, they were able to determine that he was already dead,” said the head of the operation.

On Tuesday morning, the fish was pulled out of the water using a crane and submarines. The helpers took samples and identified the shark species. According to media reports, it is said to be a snubnose sixgill shark, also known as a gray shark.

Debora Morrison, member of the Palma Aquarium Foundation and director of education and conservation at Palma Aquarium, calls for calm. The biologist explained that it is a species uncommon in Mallorca's waters and it is not excluded that the currents brought the body closer to the coast. Morrison assures that there is no danger as his presence is very unusual and that everyone can swim on the beach in peace.

“The gray reef shark poses no threat to humans and typically inhabits very deep waters. We can only see them near the coast when they are already dead or in critical situations of life or death,” concludes Debora, recalling that “sharks are absolutely necessary and a fundamentalRole in the ecosystemfulfill".

These statements are consistent with recent shark sightings in Mallorca and the fact that these were sharks that were already dead before reaching the coast.
